Agglutination in psychology is ... Agglutination in psychology: definition, features and causes

In order to disassemble the topic of the article in detail, it is necessary to find out the meaning of the word "agglutination". This term in psychology determines the connection at first sight of incompatible in reality properties, qualities or parts of objects.

Human imagination can actively create new images. The stimulus for this is served both by common life vicissitudes, and by serious personal motives. The process, or rather the way in which these images are created , is exactly the same agglutination, which will be discussed later.

Agglutination: what is it (definition)

Before doing anything, a person creates a mental image of what he will get, and makes a plan of his actions to achieve the goal. We owe all this to the imagination. It is subject to a certain pattern and exists due to other features of the human brain - the ability to analyze and synthesize. With their help, the original concept of something is decomposed into components (analysis), and then - the compound obtained in the new combination (synthesis).

Agglutination in psychology is also one of the analytical-synthetic processes. In this case, one person collects several figures, types, characters, even if they are incompatible at first glance. For example, all known centaurs - half horses, half people, or a fairy-tale hut on chicken legs - all this is the result of agglutination of images, which made them unusual, bright and memorable.

The use of agglutination in creativity

In art, many methods of imagination - agglutination, accentuation - are used often. For example, Leo Tolstoy admitted that the image of Natasha Rostova from the novel "War and Peace" was written by him immediately from two real women - the wife of Sophia and her sister, Tatyana Bers. The combination of two types of women - one impetuous, lively and addicted, and the second - feminine and gentle - helped to give birth to a whole and absolutely vital character.

Sharpening, or focusing attention in no less degree helps to achieve a memorable result. Cartoonists are especially fond of this technique. The image of a chatterbox as a person with an unusually long tongue, or a beer lover with a huge belly, makes it possible to emphasize the most essential in the appearance and habits of the people captured in the drawing.

In literary works, emphasis is made at the time of the hero's description. Sharpening the attention of the reader on any of its quality allows us to convey without any superfluous words the essence of the nature of this character and even determine the attitude of the author to him.

Agglutination of the image is not accidental

In order to better understand what agglutination is, it should be remembered that this process in the person's imagination is most often not an accidental "puzzle-picking". The combination of different details in a single image is helped by the existing idea, design, and other motives that sometimes exist on a subconscious level.

And the starting point for transformation is experience. And the more diverse and broader, the brighter and richer the imagination. In this case, it is not necessary to confuse mechanical shoveling, regrouping ready and already known elements with the creation of an integral and viable image. That is, the pictures that we use in our imagination, within the framework of a new image, also change their appearance somewhat, summing up and generalizing into a single whole.

Methods of transforming imagination

Agglutination, accentuation, typing are methods by which the transforming activity of the imagination is carried out.

Earlier we already mentioned the accentuation of traits, which is achieved by changing the proportions of the image. This method is applicable not only for caricature images, but also for creating fantastic characters. Vivid examples of such hyperbole are heroes of legends and fairy tales - for example, Svyatogor, which famous hero Ilya of Murom could easily put in his pocket, and his earth was shaking from his whistle.

Such a presentation of the size and physical strength of the hero helps the author to prove the significance, the majesty of this image and to demonstrate the inner power that he possesses.

By the way, a strong understatement of the character (for example, a boy-with-finger) can serve the same purpose, demonstrating by means of contrast the inner virtues of the character.

An equally important role in the presentation of the features of the artistic image is played by the typing method - the unification in one fictional character of the typical features of a number of really existing heroes, making it, therefore, the representative of this group of people. This is also a way of synthesizing in the process of imagination, and vivid examples of this can serve as images of Onegin, Pechorin, Oblomov, Othello and other heroes, representing a generalized portrait of the author's contemporaries.

Creative Imagination

Let us repeat that agglutination in psychology is one of the methods of creative imagination, helping to create a new original image or idea. It should be noted that the term "new" in this case has a dual meaning. After all, a new image can be both objective and subjective.

  • In the first case, such an idea does not yet exist either in a materialized or in a virtual form. That is, it is so original that it does not repeat what is already available.
  • And in the second case, novelty is obvious only to a particular person. That is, a subjectively new image is an opening only for its author, but at the same time repeats existing ones.

Once again, what is agglutination

The work of the human imagination, as is clear from the above, uses a rather limited number of techniques - agglutination, accentuation and typing. But even with such a small arsenal it is capable of much.

Thus, agglutination in psychology is not only a method of creating an artistic image on a canvas or in a literary work, but also the possibility of embodying completely new ideas in science and technology. Creative imagination allows the inventor to first mentally collect disparate details into a single whole, and then apply it in practice, making discoveries and moving progress.

Manifestations of agglutination in psychiatry

Unfortunately, agglutination in psychology is also a term denoting one of the symptoms of manifestations of exacerbations of schizophrenia.

By this is meant a state in which the patient loses the ability to distinguish certain concepts, since in their brains they are glued together. By the way, in the vocabulary of such people appears due to this a large number of neologisms (a person will come up with entirely new words or endows the old with different meanings).

The process of agglutination leads to the fact that the patient's schizophrenia is disturbed by the perception of his own "I" and the surrounding reality. For example, in some cases, patients are unable to distinguish themselves from other people or even objects. And what happens in the external world in their imagination is closely intertwined with some bodily functions (for example, rain is their tears, etc.)
