At the center of the narrative is the fate of the girl, the daughter of the landowners, trying to overcome all the vicissitudes of fate in the name of her love. It happened in 1811. In the village of Nenaradovo lived a landowner Gavrila Gavrilovich with his wife and daughter. Their family was exemplary, neighbors liked to visit them at a party. Near the beauty of Marya Gavrilovna, who was eighteen years old, the enviable grooms wore. But the girl, who adored the French love novels, refused everything. There was a good reason for this. The fact is that Masha was secretly in love with poor ensign Vladimir Nikolaevich. For the latter, this was not a mystery, her sympathy was mutual. Young lovers secretly met in the grove, then near the old chapel. They had to hide because of the discontent of the girl's parents by the choice of her daughter. Friendly and hospitable landlords refused to Vladimir Nikolayevich in a warm welcome in his house. Secret meetings continued for a long time could not, and the couple decided to get married without their blessing. Then, some time after the wedding, the young people supposed to rush to their feet and pray for forgiveness. In the meantime, it was agreed that Marya Gavrilovna would be injured in the evening and retire to her quarters. After the light is turned off in the house, three horses with the driver will wait for her. On it, she was to go to the village of Zhadrino, which is nearby. Events began to unfold as planned. As soon as dinner was served, Masha said ill and went to her room. Parents did not notice anything unusual in the behavior of her daughter. Time passed, it grew dark outside the window. A real snowstorm broke out on the street. The wind has replaced the road, and it was already impossible to see what lies ahead, more than a meter. It was at this time that Maria, accompanied by her fortress girl, left her father's house, sat down in the top three and went to Zhadrino. And Vladimir Nikolayevich meanwhile was also going on the road. He decided to ride alone on a cart in one horse, not taking accompanying with him. As soon as the hero was on a snow-swept road, he realized how stupid he had done, because nothing could be seen ahead of him. After relying on God's mercy, the ensign decided to go on. Soon he lost his way. The road was completely lost, the horse sank in the snow. Suddenly he saw a light and went to his light. It turned out that Vladimir had gone to an unfamiliar village, and the village of Zhadrino, where his bride was supposed to wait, was on the sidelines. It was already impossible to get there at the appointed time. When the ensign came to this village, the church was already closed, people were nowhere to be found. Turning, he went home.

The day after this event, the parents found Masha in the morning in bed sick. The girl started fever. In delirium she called Vladimir Nikolaevich and tried to tell us about the details of this terrible night. Called by caring parents, the doctor said that the cause of the illness is psychological, probably unhappy love. Then the mother of the girl softened, deciding that, apparently, the fate of her daughter - a poor army ensign. She sent an invitation to Vladimir Nikolaevich to visit their homes. But, unexpectedly, he refused, asking him not to bother him any more. Two weeks after these events Masha got better and did not seem to remember her fiancé. Soon Vladimir Nikolayevich was sent to the army. His name Masha found in the list of the wounded near Borodin. He died in a Moscow hospital. It was not the only loss in the life of a poor girl. Her father, Gavrila Gavrilovich, died some time later, leaving her daughter with a good condition. The bridegrooms were spinning around Masha, but all of them responded with a refusal. Only one of the young people was particularly concerned with the girl - the hussar colonel Burmin. It would seem that nothing could prevent the happiness of these two people. However, there was a wall between them, a certain lack of agreement, which prevented their rapprochement. Everything was resolved after a frank conversation between Masha and Burmin.

The colonel told the girl that he can not marry her, since he is married to another. Several years ago in a blizzard he was brought to a certain village, where he decided to take refuge in the church. There was a light, people flashed. As soon as the young man entered, they rushed to him with the words: "At last you have come!". In the corner sat a pale young lady. She was placed with him in front of the altar, the priest performed a wedding ceremony. When the bride turned to him to kiss, she cried out and fainted. The colonel hastily left the church. Several years passed, and he still does not know who his wife is, and where she is. Hearing this story, Maria Gavrilovna cried out: "And you did not recognize me?". Burmin fell at her feet. This episode finished his story "The Blizzard" by Pushkin.

An excerpt from Zhukovsky's ballad "Svetlana" in the epigraph of the work says that these two creations of great authors are very similar. There is a general mystical attitude in them. All events in them are not accidental, but are predetermined by fate.
