A. Greene, "Running on the waves." Summary

The novel "Running on the waves" was written by A. Greene in a romantic genre. Modern critics would have attributed it to fantasy, although the author himself did not recognize this. This work is about unfulfilled. The action takes place, as in most works of Green, in a fictitious country.

In the evening everyone gathered at Sters to play cards. Among other guests was Thomas Garvey. This young man stayed in Lisse because of a serious illness. During the game, he distinctly heard a female voice say: "Running on the waves." And yesterday Thomas watched from the window tavern for a girl who had just come down from the steamer. She held herself as if she could control herself and people, and circumstances. In the morning Harvey found out that struck him a stranger named Biche Senyel. For some reason, it seemed to him that the girl and yesterday's voice were somehow connected. When he saw a ship with the inscription "Running on the waves" in the port, his guess only got stronger. Captain Gez, a sharp and not very friendly man, agreed to take Harvey as a passenger only with the permission of the owner of the ship - a certain Brown.

When Thomas returned with a note, the captain became more welcoming. He introduced Harvey to Butler and Syncright - his assistants. The rest of the team reminded not sailors, but different rabble.

Already during the voyage, Thomas learns that this vessel was once built by Ned Seniel. On the table, the captain had a portrait of his daughter. When Ned went bankrupt, Gez bought a ship. In Dagon the captain took aboard three women for amusement. But soon Garvey heard one of them scream, and Gez threatened her. Defending the woman, Thomas so hit the captain in the jaw that he fell down. The zealous Gez ordered Harvey to be put in a boat and put into the sea. When the ship was almost sailing, a woman jumped into it, wrapped up from head to foot. The girl's voice was the same as the one who uttered a mysterious phrase from Sters at the party. She said her name was Frei Grant, and she told me to go south. There he will meet a ship bound for Gel-Guy, who will pick it up. At the request of the girl, Garvey promised to not tell anyone, not even Bicea Senieel, about her. Then Frei Grant stepped onto the water and swept along the waves. By lunchtime, Thomas really found the ship "Nyrok", which was heading to Gel-Gyu and picked it up. There Garvey once again heard about Frei Grant. Her father had a frigate. Once a wave with a perfectly calm sea lowered it next to an unusually beautiful island, it was not possible to approach it. Freesi, however, insisted on this. Then the young lieutenant noticed that she was so light and thin that she could run straight on the water herself. The girl really jumped off the ship and easily walked along the waves. Immediately the fog dropped, and when he was dispersed, there was no more Freesi or the island. The fact that Thomas listened to the legend especially closely, was noticed only by Proctor-Daisy's niece.

Soon the ship arrived in Gel-Guy. In the city there was a carnival. Thomas was near the marble figure, on its pedestal was carved a familiar inscription: "Running on the waves." It turned out that Frei Grant, a hundred years ago, saved Williams Hobs (the founder of the city) when he was shipwrecked. The course indicated by the girl led him to this shore, which was then still deserted. Harvey was informed that a woman would wait for him in the theater. He was hoping to see Senyel, but it turned out to be Daisy. Thomas called her Beech, the girl was offended and left. A minute later, he actually met Senyel: she was looking for Geza to redeem the ship.

In the morning Thomas and Butler went to the hotel where the captain stopped. Gez lay in his room, he was killed. It was said that the shot was heard right after Beech's visit to the captain. She was detained as a suspect, but Butler admitted that he was a murderer. He and Gez had their own accounts: the captain did not give him much of the income received for the transportation of opium. Butler went to his room, there was no one there. But he had to hide in the cupboard, as the captain appeared with the lady. Unable to withstand the pestering of Geza, Biche jumped out of the window of the room to the landing. The captain pounced on Butler, who had climbed out of the closet, and the one, defending himself, killed him.

Summary "Running on the waves": 30-35 chapters

Biche decided to sell the ship at auction. Garvey told her about Frei Grant. She insisted that it was just a legend. Thomas thought with regret that Daisy would have believed him, but she was already engaged. However, soon he was destined to meet her again. Daisy said that they parted with the groom. After a while, the heroes got married and lived in a house by the sea. They were visited by Dr. Filatr. He said that he saw the broken hull of the ship "Running on the waves" off the coast of a deserted island. Nothing is known about the fate of his crew. I saw the doctor and Beech. She was already married and gave Harvey a small letter with the wish of a happy life. On behalf of all Daisy said that Garvey is right - Frei Grant exists in fact.
