The first of March

The whole country remembered the day of the great feat of the fighters of the sixth company of the second battalion of the one hundred and fourth paratrooper regiment of the seventy-sixth Pskov Airborne Division. Year 2000th. Since the beginning of February, the largest group of militants since the fall of Grozny retreated to Shatoi district, where it was blocked. After the air and artillery preparations, the battle for Shato followed. The militants nevertheless broke through two large groups: Ruslan Gelayev to the north-west to the village of Komsomolskoye, and Khattab to the northeast through Ulus-Kert, where the main battle took place.

The federal troops consisted of one company of regiment 104 (Airborne Division) -6th company, heroically deceased, commanded by lieutenant-colonel Mark N. Yevtyukhin, fifteen soldiers from the 4th company of the same regiment under the command of Major Guard Alexander Vasilievich Dostavalov and 1st company of the first battalion of that The same regiment under the command of the Major Guard Sergei Ivanovich Baran. The militants were more than two and a half thousand people: the Idris, Abu Walid, Shamil Basayev and Khattab groups.

Mount Istez-Kord

On the twenty-eighth of February commander of the 104th regiment Colonel Sergei Yurievich Melentyev, who briefly survived his sixth company, ordered the height of Isti-Kord, which dominated the area. The sixth company with Major Sergei Georgievich Molodov at the head was moved immediately and managed to occupy only the height of 776, four and a half kilometers from the designated mountain, where twelve paratroopers were sent.

The altitude commanded by the commander was occupied by Chechen fighters, with whom the reconnaissance entered the battle, retreating to the main forces left behind. Commander Molodov entered the battle and was fatally wounded, on the same day on February 29 he died. The command was accepted by Mark N. Evtyukhin.

The Brotherhood of War

But just four hours ago, Shatoi fell under the blow of federal troops. The militants furiously broke through the ring, without looking at the losses. Here they were met by a sixth company. The battle was fought only by the first and second platoon, since the third was destroyed by the militants still on the slope. By the end of the day the loss of the company accounted for one third of the total number of personnel. Thirty-one people - the number of dead paratroopers in the first hours of battle with a tight environment of the enemy.

By morning, soldiers from the fourth company, led by Alexander Vasilyevich Dostavalov, had broken through to them. He violated the order, leaving well-fortified lines at a nearby height, took with him only fifteen fighters and came to the rescue. They also hastened to their aid comrades from the first company of the first battalion. They crossed the river Abazulgol, got there in ambush and were fixed on the shore. Only on March 3 the first company managed to break into positions. All this time, the battle did not subside.

Argun Gorge

The night of March 1, 2000, claimed the lives of eighty-four paratroopers who never missed Chechen bandits. The death of the sixth company is the heaviest and largest in the Second Chechen War. In Cherekh, at home, at his home checkpoint, this date reminds a stone on which it is carved: "The sixth company has gone from here to immortality." The last words of Lieutenant-Colonel Evtyukhin heard the whole world: "I call fire on myself!". When the militants went to break through the avalanche, it was 6.50 in the morning. Bandits did not even shoot: why spend bullets on twenty-six wounded paratroopers, if the choice of militants more than three hundred.

But the hand-to-hand fight nevertheless began, although the forces were unequal. Guardsmen did their duty. All those who could still hold arms entered the battle, and even those who could not. Twenty-seven dead enemies fell on each of the remaining half-dead paratroopers. The bandits lost 457 selected militants, but they could not break through to Selmentausen or further to Vedeno, after which the road to Dagestan was practically open. All roadblocks were removed on high orders.

Khattab may not lie when he said on the radio that he bought a passage for five hundred thousand dollars, but it did not work out. They attacked the company with waves, in a soulmanship. Knowing the terrain well, the militants were picked up closely. And then in the course went sapper blades and bayonet knives, butts and just kulaks. Twenty hours the Pskov paratroopers held the height.

Only six remained alive. Two rescued the commander, who covered their jump from the cliff with automatic fire. The rest of the survivors were mistaken for the dead, but they were alive and after a while crawled to the location of their troops. The company of heroes: twenty-two warriors posthumously became Heroes of Russia. Names of eighty-four paratroopers were named streets in many cities of the country, even in Grozny.
