10 most scandalous works of art and art projects of all time

As in any sphere of human activity, provocative creations occur from time to time in the world of art, or actions that are not absolutely understandable to the public occur. The strangest of them we gathered in our article.

"Guernica" by Pablo Picasso (1937)

This picture is considered one of the most powerful anti-war works of art in the history of painting. On it, in the typical Picasso style, a sense of doom is transmitted. The painting is named after the Spanish village of Guernica, which suffered from bombing. All the proceeds from the sale of this canvas, the artist donated to the needs of the liberators of Spain.

"The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of the Living" by Damien Hirst (1991)

Damien Hirst has repeatedly argued to the whole world that art can be very different. In 1991, he introduced his new installation - a tiger shark, embalmed in formaldehyde. After 15 years, he replaced this carnivorous fish with a new one. The work itself does not mean anything, but it makes people think about how fleeting life may be after meeting with such a beast, as well as how a relatively weak person could be at the top of the food chain.

"The Tree" by Paul McCarthy (2014)

This installation, shown in Paris on the eve of Christmas, caused a storm of emotions among art lovers and ordinary people because of their similarity with some juicy adaptations. By the way, after its appearance, the Parisian sex shops experienced a real boom in sales.

"Fountain" by Marcel Duchamp (1917)

Modern art knows no boundaries. The urinal photographed from above is also its object. After all, art is all objects, pictures and sounds that can evoke certain emotions in the individual and in society as a whole.

"Everyone I've ever slept with" Tracy Emin (1995)

This is the most original work of an English artist. The tent shows the names of all people with whom Tracy had a platonic or sexual relationship between 1963 and 1995. The installation shows that art can be very personal, but at the same time completely public.

Piss Christ Andresa Serrano (1987)

In this unusual photograph, a small crucifix is depicted, lowered into a jar, which the artist has filled ... with his own urine. Like the installation of the shark Damien Hirst, this photo is completely open to the interpretation of the audience. Some consider it blasphemy, while others see it as a criticism of modern religion and Christianity in particular.

"The World" by Marcus Harvey (1995)

The portrait of Mira Hindley, who killed five children with her friend in Manchester, is made of fingerprints of children's palms in white, gray and black colors. After a terrible tragedy, which caused a big resonance in England, the British press described the criminal as the most evil woman in the country. When in 1995 this picture was first introduced to the public, The Sun wrote that Mira Hindley should just hang in the Royal Academy of Arts. Unfortunately, only in the form of painting.

"Graham is the only person able to survive in a car accident" Patricia Piccinini (2016)

This installation mixed art, graphic design and scientific research. "Graham" is a demonstration of how a person should be to survive in the most terrible car accident without using pillows and seat belts or other precautions.

The installation is performed as an interactive installation. Viewers can click on various parts of Graham's body and learn the characteristics that make it resistant even to the most severe damages.

"Cathedral performance" of the group Pussy Riot (2012)

Many remember the huge scandal that erupted after the Pussy Riot group staged a punk rock show at the Christ the Savior Cathedral. With such a speech, the girls tried to protest against the enormous influence of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Russian Orthodox Church. Three of the five participants were arrested, which caused a huge response around the world. Many artists, including Madonna, expressed their support for Pussy Riot and demanded an amnesty from the Russian government for the participants of this audacious show. It is doubtful that such an expression of protest in the future future the international community will consider an element of art.

"Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci (1503-1517)

The life and work of the legendary Italian creator are shrouded in secrets, which give his works great value. The most famous work is considered to be the painting "Mona Lisa". Until now, there is no common opinion whether the woman who is depicted on it is smiling or not.
