TravelsTips for tourists

Which cities are on the Volga - the main Russian river?

The Volga flows into the Caspian Sea! And on the way to it has served for centuries and centuries a water transport route, a good place for settling people, for trade. So it was in those days when the concept of "tourism" was still not in sight. And nowadays the Volga is also a blessed tourist route. Which cities are on the Volga? There are 68 in all. A large number. And this is only the so-called Great Volga! And how many cities are still in the Volga region?

Do not consider the rivers, rivulets and streams that flow into the main river of central Russia. Cities that stand on the Volga, appeared gradually, but the largest settlements are at the same time the oldest. Thus, Kazan and Yaroslavl celebrated their millennial jubilees, a little younger than Kostroma - Moscow's younger sister ("dad" they have in common - Yuri Dolgoruky), founded in 1152. Quite a solid age in Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, a little younger - Astrakhan, Cheboksary, Saratov, Samara, Volgograd. And these are only large cities, regional or republican centers!

And what other cities are on the Volga? Not so large, but with deep historical roots. Myshkin, Rybinsk, Uglich, Kineshma, Ples, Rzhev - it is impossible to simply list all 68 cities and not offend those that are not named. Some of them are included in the famous tourist route "Golden Ring", for example, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ples, Uglich. But other cities that stand along the banks of the Volga deserve close attention.

So, answering the question: "Which cities are on the Volga?" - The tourist is trying to solve his problem of choice. And the choice is indeed huge. Rest on the Volga includes, for example, stay in various sanatoria, rest houses, tourist bases, which in total tour operators number more than 400! And in the cities and settlements of the Upper Volga there are both places for rest and relaxation, and sanatoriums, which also emphasize the general improvement of the holidaymakers. Fishing here is specific, for an amateur. Average Volga specializes in sanatorium treatment and rest. But the Lower Volga provides tourists fishing, which attracts fans from different parts of the country and from abroad. Equal to it can not be found in the whole of Central Russia.

And, of course, the Volga itself is at the disposal of tourists throughout the navigable period, as a developed branch of the tourist business is river cruises. You can find a variety of lengths and range of routes. There are short cruises, literally for several days, but there are long and very expensive, but covering practical all the famous Volga cities. For example, a cruise from Moscow to Astrakhan and back. Curiously, most of the ships are named after Russian writers and artists.

Thanks to the system of canals and locks, some cruises combine a trip along the Upper Volga with navigation to Valaam and St. Petersburg. Which cities are on the Volga, you can see with your own eyes, not only from the side of the ship, but also during excursions, which are full of stay in each city. And each is interesting and beautiful in its own way.
