"What Women Want": actors and roles

A lot of Hollywood land has given birth to various melodramas. The most interesting of them are those in which a man, let us speak directly, a man of fashion and a bad person (alpha male), as a result of the plot twists and turns becomes a sensitive, deeply moral person.

Simply put, a spiritual revolution is taking place with the hero. We will talk about one of these films in our article, namely: "What Women Want". Actor Mel Gibson played the main role in it.

Alpha male

The film begins with the fact that you see Nick Marshall. He is a typical modern man and don Juan. Immediately reveals the psychological background of Nick's success in women. The man was brought up practically among dancers, that's why he learned to manipulate ladies well, really not understanding them. He'll have it again, and in the very near future. This is the childhood of the hero. The film "What Women Want" is the focus of attention.

N. Marshall works as an advertiser in one major agency. His specialization is "male advertising": girls in bikinis and so on. He is obsessed with sex and women. In his portrait at the beginning of the film, the main thing is that he treats women like things, in a word, consumer.

Nick gets a "click on the nose" from a woman

Nick feels that life was a success. He counts on the post of creative director in his office. And then suddenly the chief of the company - Dan Wanamaker (Alan Alda) calls him and says that he takes a woman - Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt) as creative director. In order for the reader to understand the scale of her personality, Nick's new manager is as steep in advertising as Robert de Niro or Al Pacino (or Mel Gibson) in the movie.

What a blow for Nick! And the fact is that he does not know women well, and the fair sex (or rather, goods for them) brought the advertising business $ 40 billion last year. So Dan decided to try Darcy, and Nick got only a friendly pat on the shoulder. That's how the girl from the movie "What Women Want" compels Lovelace. Actor M. Gibson plays it gorgeously!

Relations between Darcy and Nick. Hatred

On the fly at the new boss all the members of the creative department get the job: to advertise purely feminine things. Nick resentment at the meeting in every possible way shows his disregard for Darcy.

And yes, a very important detail. Although Nick is successful with women and earns well, the viewer sees that as a man he is so-so. Marshall is lonely. He's divorced. Nika's daughter does not like him and regards her father as an insensitive stump. In short, Mel Gibson creates the image of a typical male male on the screen at the beginning of the film. The film "What Women Want" is directed against this anthropological type.

In the evening of the same day after the meeting, Nick, thoroughly typed wine, still decides to work and think about how to introduce the female set to the consumer. It consists of nail polish, hair gel, pantyhose, mascara, wax for depilation, bra, remedy from black dots on the face skin, bath salts.

Nick decided to try all these things for inspiration on himself. As a result of all manipulations, Marshall is like a transvestite.

Piquancy of the situation is that in such a form the father finds a daughter, and she came with a guy. Nick is uncomfortable, Alexandra too. When the guy's daughter (Eric Balfour) runs away from the huge apartment of a strange father, the parent and his offspring quarrel. And as a result of an accident with a hair dryer Nika is shocked. Waking up in the morning, he discovers that he hears women's thoughts.

Marshall's relationship with the thoughts of women. Despair

First, the main character thinks that he was cursed. He only tells some people about the occasion that happened to him. Of course, very few people believe him. He even tries to reconstruct the events of that memorable evening, and it even beats up again, but it's all useless - he still hears the thoughts of the girls. The ways of despair lead him to the office of the psychoanalyst. Specialist is a woman.

The Revelation of Nick Marshall

She tells him that he is the chosen one. According to her, Freud died without knowing just one secret: what women want (actor Mel Gibson in the film of the same name played perfectly). And to him (to Nick Marshall) this gift fell right into his hands. He can become a conductor between those who are on Venus and those who are on Mars.

As if confirming the fantastic luck of the protagonist, there is a regular meeting of the advertising department. On it, employees discuss the ideas that they have developed in connection with women's everyday items. And then Nick hears the thoughts of female employees and extradites them for his own.

Advertising for Nike. Relations with Darcy are getting warmer

In the company of Nick and Darcy comes an order for advertising women's sports shoes. Nick, who knows about the true needs of a woman about the same as a student-philologist about higher mathematics, begins without a twinge of conscience to fumble in Darcy's thoughts and give her ideas for her.

The paradox, but the more Nick gets into Darcy's inner world, the more he likes it and the more he understands women in general.

As a result, he is preparing a stunning project for Nike. Everyone is delighted. Even Darcy, who did not expect Nick to be such a sensitive and wonderful person. Contact with the existential experience of the opposite sex made the brutal man a little feminine. He became much more humane.

Darcy's departure from the company and the spiritual transformation of the hero

In turn, Dan Wanamaker, realizing that all the work on the project Nike made Nick, repents before him. The boss says something that shakes Marshall to the core - he fired Darcy. Nick in desperation! He confesses that the ideas were not his, that it's all Darcy and only her.

Dan does not understand what's the matter, but still agrees to take the former creative director to work.

And of course, everything ends as it should be, fairy tales have a happy ending. Nick resorts to Darcy, confesses before her, as before God. It touches her. The heroes bathe in tears of each other. Everything ends with a savory kiss.

Funny lines of the film: Nick-lover and Nick-father

Promoting the idea that a man hears women's thoughts, neither the director (Nancy Meyers) nor the writers could pass by the topic of sex in the film. A couple of Mel Gibson was actress Marisa Tomei. She played a mad coffee shop worker - Lola. It is also noteworthy that Lola is a young, eternally promising actress. Getting to know Nick for her is important strategically.

The scene of the meeting of Nick (Mel Gibson) and Lola (Marisa Tomei) is the most ridiculous in the film.

Particularly worth noting is the line of "fathers and children." First, Nick, frankly speaking, the father is negligent. With the passage of time, he increasingly understands women, and hence, his daughter Alexander (Ashley Johnson). If you can put it figuratively and metaphorically, then before the accident that happened to him, Nick was an outsider to a daughter, a stranger. And in the final picture the father became her best friend.

Despite the joke, the picture "What Women Want" raises many questions that are still relevant in the relationship of the sexes. True, I must say that they will always be on the agenda. For example, questions about understanding, acceptance, tenderness, sensitivity, and not only between a man and a woman, but in general in the relationships of people.

There is also this director's wonderful film "Love by the rules and without" (2003). He is very similar in style to What women want (2000). The main characters are also elderly. The focus of the fate of the old bachelor and ladies' man Harry Sanborn (he was brilliantly played by Jack Nicholson).

He meets only with the young. If a woman is more than 30, then she is an old woman for him. In short, the male consumer, like the protagonist of the film "What Women Want". Actor Mel Gibson gave us this wonderful image.

Then, by chance, Harry gets to know his mother's mother and ... the same scheme: from hatred to love, and in addition, the spiritual revolution of the protagonist. To view strictly required. In addition, as it seems, the film "Love by the rules and without" is made better and collected a more star cast. And this is despite the fact that Brooke Elliott does not play in it.

Films are united not only by one director, but also by the general idea - some outlandish female dream that a bad person (man) will become good, but at the same time will retain the unconditional charm of a scoundrel.
