We make pile mats with our own hands. Pile mat: a master class

You can decorate the interior with interesting things made with your own hands. Try, for example, to make a mat of braids. The master class, presented in this article with photos of some stages of work, clearly demonstrates the whole process.

History of rugs

It is believed that the first woven products were made by man more than 2500 years ago. By the same time, the beginning of the formation of hand techniques for the production of various rugs and knitted things also applies . Slavs carpet products belonged to "grassroots" techniques. This meant that knitting, weaving thin fabrics, weaving lace assumed a higher level of skill. And the manufacture of simple paintings did not require the presence of virtuoso skills. Therefore, in any hut, the main decoration was rugs on benches, ovens and chests. Later they began to cover also the floor, as the old premises were heated quickly with cooling Russian furnaces. So different rugs and rugs became an integral part of the traditional Slavic decor. Especially popular since the XIX century homespun paths. Primitive manufacturing techniques became the basis for creating various weaving trends, characteristic for each people.

Materials used

Very often in the old days, to make various plaits of braids with their own hands or knitted rugs, straw was used as a raw material, flaxen, hemp. Such rough products found their place at the entrance to the hut. To obtain softer bedspreads, old things were being used that were cut into narrow strips and woven on a dense basis after spindle spinning. A special place among all household items was occupied by round products, such as, for example, the aforementioned mat of braids. The master class, the description of which is given below in this article, will help to create a similar simple product in folk technique. To learn how to perform, at first glance, a simple job, you need to master all the technology in stages. When choosing a material, consider its structure, density and thickness. So, for example, making rug mats with your own hands to cover chairs, sofas and stools, it is not worthwhile to use in one piece an old thin jersey and stripes from a warm drape.

Manufacturing of billets

Before you get to work, prepare enough of the appropriate material. To make carpets from pigtails with their own hands, you will need fabric tapes for weaving. For this, cut any old thing into the same strips. The width can be from 2 to 4 cm, the length will be limited by the size of the product. Knitted fabrics and lightweight fabrics sew, stitching strips on a sewing machine or hands, joining the diagonal slices. Such material (moreover, if it is strewed and frayed around the edges) must first be rolled into tubular "thread". To do this, tilt the two edges of the tape on both sides, and then fold it down twice more. Thus, we get a four-layer product. Using an iron, iron each bend, then the contours of the lace will be clear and neat. To make it easier to carry out such laborious work, you can use pre-pins for stamping. If the fabric does not crumble and is sufficiently dense, other methods of producing a coil of continuous yarns, which are described below, can be used.

Variants of connection of two belts for weaving with each other

To make the canvas beautiful and without unnecessary irregularities, the fabric "yarn" should be rolled into tangles with continuous threads. This is especially important if the mat of braids is knitted or wobbles in a circle. Let's consider two ways of connecting two separate segments of rags:

  • First option. Make small longitudinal incisions from both edges with a length of approximately 0.7-0.8 cm (assuming that the finished rolled tape has a width of about 1-1.2 cm). Place them next to each other. Then put the end of the right ribbon through the hole in the left ribbon. Pull out the free end for 2-3 cm. After that, the reverse side of the piece of the left tape pass through the hole in the right ribbon. Pull slightly both ends of the formed tissue segment in different directions.
  • The second option. Make two notches in a manner similar to that described in the first version of the joint. Then, the two ends of the ribbons are placed a little overlapping, creating a whole "thread" (the left one on top of the right one). Thus the holes must coincide. Then reverse the end of the left ribbon from the bottom into the slot and pull to get the loop node.

Making braids with different weaving options

Since ancient times, there are many techniques for creating blanks, of which rugs and cloaks are made. Multicolor pigtail mats with their own hands could be decorated with original ornaments. An unpretentious pattern on a rectangular canvas was obtained due to the alternation of fabric "threads" of different shades during work. Woven in one and adjacent rows of strips joined each other in color. Thanks to this, the effect of the mosaic was created due to the overlapping of identical interspersions of the common ornament. Circular weaving was usually characterized by alternating alternation of monophonic braids. But if you prefer brightness, originality and diversity, alternate when weaving several threads from different tangles. Their number can vary from 3 pieces to 5. Blanks from a large number of threads are more suitable for rectangular products. Round rugs, as a rule, are made from traditional tapes of three threads.

Different ways of fixing on the basis of

After the manufacture of braided bands of sufficient length and winding them into tangles, it is first of all necessary to determine the shape of the rug. Then the braided rugs of braids are fixed on the basis (whether it's a rectangle, a square or a circle) in one of two ways:

- with the help of glue;

- machine or manual seam.

The first option is more convenient when laying tight and rigid workpieces. And how to sew a mat of braids woven from thin material? You can carefully create the product row by row, tucking in the base, for example, with a zigzag seam. Contrast on the color of the line will be an additional design of the product. In the event that you do not have special equipment in the form of a machine, you can connect improvised laces with secret stitches manually. Then it is necessary to perform the work in two stages, immediately following one another: stitching the adjacent braids and laying them with fastening on a sufficiently dense fabric basis.

Edging the edges of carpets or tracks

Careful should be the edge of both the base of the product and the ends of the braces fixed on top of it. The simplest thing is when choosing a round form of a rug. Cut out two blanks of the desired diameter from the fabric and sew them, having deviated from the edge by 1-1.2 cm and leaving a small hole unshielded. Turn out the face outward and manually sew secret stitches through the lumen. Put on top of the resulting base long fabric braided bands, moving in a spiral. If desired, you can sew ribbons without using the base. Then the made home mat will not be too hard on your own. The ideal option for its use is a cape on a sofa or an armchair. When processing a rectangular base, do not sew it from all sides. After all, in the gaps, located at the ends, you can hide the tails of braids. If you like fringe, you can leave the ends of the ribbons after weaving, fixing them on top with a machine stitch and leveling the edge.

As you can see, you can endlessly fantasize and experiment in making tracks and rugs, creating unique author's accessories and items for decorating the interior.
