Vocals: what is vocals and their main types

Every music lover invariably encounters the concept of vocals. Most people assume that vocals are just singing. This is partly true. But let's consider the question of what vocal is, more broadly. Among other things, we will try to consider its main types.

What is vocals: definition

In general, if you look at a lot of explanatory dictionaries, there are a lot of interpretations of what vocal is. What does this concept mean in terms of, so to speak, the musical scientific approach? In the general understanding - the ability to sing, voice, the art of singing, the ability to express certain emotions in a voice at a musical level, etc.

Often, one can also find an interpretation of the essence of the question of what vocal is in music. Many musicologists, composers and even the performers themselves call it the most sophisticated musical instrument capable of touching the deep feelings and strings of the soul. Agree, it is the human voice that can transmit an unthinkable amount of emotional shades, which is inaccessible to any of the famous musical instruments.

Types of vocals

So, let's look at the vocals. What is the ability to own a voice musically in relation to different types of music, we now look. Let us dwell on the most common classification.

The basis for the entire vocal school is the so-called classical vocals, which are sometimes called academic. It is not necessary to think that this is only an operatic production of a voice, because classical music, like any other direction, implies different genres. As a rule, such a voice is characterized by an incredible volume and depth, and in most cases does not involve singing into the microphone, since its use can cause strong distortion of the voice that is heard in the speakers.

It was from the academic vocals that the division of voices into the corresponding groups differed in the height of the voice, that is, the possibility of singing notes in a certain range and with a certain timbre. Here you and soprano, and mezzo-soprano, and tenor, and viola, and baritone, and much more.

One of the most common can be called pop vocal. It's probably not necessary to explain what pop or pop music is. Here the framing of the voice, corresponding to the classical one, is completely absent, although there are requirements.

Unfortunately, there are so many entertainers today that many of them consider themselves to be vocalists even if they do not know how to sing, and all the vocal parts are "leveled" with the help of computer programs like Melodyne, which allows you to pull up any false note at the desired level of sound. However, for the stage vocal is not so important, here the first place is given to music and rhythm. It's no wonder that pop vocal means, so to speak, at least just the ability to sing somehow. But there are also a lot of professional performers, who still focus on the voice perception of any composition.

One of the most difficult manifestations of voice possession is jazz vocals. What is the jazz voice of the singer and singer? This is a very delicate voice in a very wide range, the ability to very accurately take dissonant notes with a transition, say, through an octave and more, but the main thing here is the ability to improvise. Actually, the very jazz music is basically based on improvisation.

Now consider another type, called rock vocals. What is rock, know everything - music is often very expressive. It is clear that "roquezny" vocal and implies, first of all, expression and incredible dynamics. Without this, the rock music itself looks "dry".

The vocal here is along with the rhythm guitar prevailing. It is he who carries the charge of energy, for which fans love rock music. But here too, there are some reservations. It's no secret that rock ballads are recognized in the world as the most melodic. So the rock vocalist should not only be able to "make" the audience, when rhythmic compositions are performed, but also convey all the notes of the mood of the ballad.

By the way, in recent years in rock, academic vocal is very often used. This is most often seen in Scandinavian bands and performers. Take at least the former vocalist of the famous Finnish band Nightwish named Tarja Turunen. Her voice, almost in all definitions, is suitable for classical production.

Vocalise

Separately, it is worth considering and vocalization, because it, too, is a kind of vocal. In principle, the technique of performance implies the use of only vowels of the type "a", "o", "y", "e", etc. in singing. However, the seemingly simple technique of execution is much more complicated in many respects than with the use of text.

One of the most striking examples is the composition of the Pink Floyd band called Great Gig In The Sky from the album Dark Side Of The Moon, which has become a classic of the genre. Even in the concert version, the skills and professionalism of the singers who perform the main part are felt. By the way, usually the group invites black women, because they have very specific voices, which in some ways resonate with the jazz school and the style of soul.

Conclusion

Of course, this is not all that can be said about vocals. It remains to add that if a person wants to learn how to sing and flexibly own his voice, the lessons should be devoted to more than one year, with daily rattles designed to develop the technique of performance, and also significantly expand the range of the voice range of the sounds.
