The Church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya: historical milestones

The first church in honor of the saints of the first-class apostles was built in Basmannaya Sloboda at the end of the XVII century at the request of the military commander Bashev. From historical archives it is known that by 1702 114 parishes belonged to the arrival of this church, which were taxed on its maintenance.

Building

Since the church was originally wooden, a project was quickly developed that would allow replacing it with a stone building. Construction began in 1705 next to the existing church. Where then the wooden church of Peter and Paul was lost on Novaya Basmannaya is unknown.

It should be noted that the structure, which we are talking about, was made in accordance with the personal picture of Emperor Peter the Great. In total, eight temples were built in this way, seven of which are located in St. Petersburg. And only the church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya in Moscow was built. Money for the erection of the church was also granted by the Tsar in the amount of two thousand rubles. The influence of the emperor is due to the particular architecture of the temple, a model of which His Majesty borrowed in Holland during his trip there. In 1708, consecration took place and divine services began in the lower chapel of the church, while the main church continued to be built. The throne was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In 1714, Peter the Great issued a decree stating that in connection with the transfer of the capital to St. Petersburg, all stone construction in Moscow must be suspended in order to occupy the builders by erecting a new city on the Neva. Therefore, the church of Peter and Paul in the New Basmannaya Sloboda was included in the list of buildings temporarily frozen. Only in 1717, by special order of the Senate in response to a petition for permission to complete the temple, construction work was restored. By that time there were very few of them - it was only necessary to install the spire and erect the vaults over the porch. Finally, the building of the temple was completed in 1719. A year later, a carved iconostasis, a pulpit and a choir was ordered to the temple.

In 1770, the temple complex acquired another chapel in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. His consecration took place two years later. In 1812 the church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya was looted by Napoleon's troops.

In 1856-1868 the church was considerably reconstructed. This was caused by the need for repair work, and in addition, by that time the temple was too small to meet the needs in the prayer room. As a result, the church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya was significantly expanded. In the complex were added two chapels. Both were dedicated to the Mother of God: one in honor of the icon "Vladimirskaya", the second - in honor of the image "Soothe my sorrows."

The Church after the Revolution

After the revolution, the church continued to function as a religious building on the basis of a special treaty, according to which believers received it for perpetual rent free of charge. In the crypt of the temple, at one time there was even a spiritual academy, which lost its historical premises.

In 1921 the church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya was robbed of the pleasure of the city authorities, who on the basis of claims to believers about negligent attitude to the property transferred to them closed the church two years later. In fact, the community was disbanded because it acted on the side of Patriarch Tikhon and refused to join the renewal movement.

In the end, in 1924, the temple was handed over to the official renewal church at the time. However, in the same year, on the special petition and complaint of the "Tikhonovites", they were returned to the upper church, leaving the believers of the renewal orientation the right to use the lower one. Subsequently, twice attempted to close the temple, but it was possible to do it only in 1935. The building was originally transferred to the military warehouse, but it often passed from hand to hand. As a result, it was taken over by the All-Russia Research Institute "Geophysics".

Return of the Temple

The Church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya, whose reviews allow it to be attributed to one of the most beautiful temples of the capital, was handed back to believers in 1992. Until now, it continues to work on restoration and restoration.
