Verbs of exclusion in English

Each language has its own complexities and subtleties in the study. Probably, most will agree that the most difficult moment in learning English are verbs-exceptions or, as they are still called, irregular verbs. The difficulty is confirmed by statistical data on the verbal errors most often committed by foreigners. More than half of them relate to the cases where verbs-exceptions are to be used. English language directly depends on the verb, which is why the correctness of its use has such a significant place in the study of this subject.

To create various temporary constructions, three forms of the verb are used. Standard verbs are conjugated at times by adding the ending -ed (-d) to the infinitive. While the conjugation of the irregular verbs is simply memorized.

Most verbs are standard. In this case, it is sufficient to know the infinitive in order to form any necessary form.

Wrong verbs are due to the origin of Old English. They are based on the old rules of the formation of temporary forms. Some of them have a foreign origin. Thanks to the young American version of English, some non-standard verbs acquired the ability to conjugate as standard. Although it should be noted that even this version of the language has its own irregular verbs, which the British do not have. These local features have led to the fact that even native speakers sometimes experience difficulties. That is why to find a really complete list of irregular verbs - an invention almost impossible. However, they still need to be taught.

Only because the verbs of exclusion are often used in speech, their forms are so firmly rooted in the language. Of the more than 500 verbs, about 200 are actively used in everyday speech. The story of the verbs-exceptions would be incomplete without resorting to insufficient verbs. They do not have the form of conjugation at any time. For example, can / could, will / would, must and some others. They are often studied separately, as the rules for their use are rather complicated.

Beginning to study non-standard verbs is best from the 50 most used. The rest will come into the conversation gradually as it improves. Teachers recommend first of all to study their pronunciation well and give them some time to read. After this you can proceed to direct memorization. Today, there are many proven ways for long-term memorization. It is necessary to choose according to the principle, which method is clearer and more accessible. To remember pronunciation, the best way to listen to a recording, for example, when you are on the road.

Verbs-exceptions will be remembered even better if you add video sequences to the listener. However, this method will already require specially allocated time. Another way to connect visual memory is to make cards yourself. And it is desirable not to print them, namely to write by hand. The convenience of this method lies in the fact that those cards that have already been remembered well can be temporarily put aside, replacing them with new ones.

A very good way to group verbs-exceptions by the principle of the formation of times. For example, separately write out those words where all three forms are the same, the third and the second coincide, or where all the forms are different.

However, the best way, although rarely used, is the method of making proposals. In this case, the word is remembered right in the context. Moreover, activation of the vocabulary takes place. You can write the same sentence at different times, you can invent another.

And whatever method was chosen - do not forget about the repetition. And pretty soon non-standard verbs will be a natural element of speech.
