VAZ-2110: replacement of thermostat and thermocouple

Thermostat - an element of the engine cooling system, designed to regulate the direction of the flow of coolant (coolant). This mechanical device responds to the coolant temperature and directs it either bypassing the radiator or through the radiator. This is necessary in order for the cold engine to warm up faster after start-up.

If the thermostat fails, the thermal state of the power unit is disrupted, resulting in overheating or slow warm-up. And if in the latter case the malfunction does not pose serious problems, then overheating of the power unit of the car can completely disable it.

In this article we will talk about how the replacement of the VAZ-2110 thermostat equipped with an injector engine is being carried out. But before that, let's figure out what the device is, and how to determine its malfunction.

Thermostat design

Structurally, the "dozens" thermostat consists of an aluminum body with nozzles for connecting hoses and a working mechanism (thermoelement) located inside. The latter is a brass or copper cylinder filled with wax with an integrated pusher-pin, at the end of which the valve is located.

When the coolant is heated to a certain temperature (80-82 ° C), the wax melts and expands, pushing this pin, which in turn moves the valve, opening it. When cooled, the wax solidifies and decreases in size, and the valve spring returns it back to the closed position.

Symptoms of a faulty thermostat

If your car's engine warms up to an operating temperature of more than seven minutes - this is a sure sign that the thermostat valve has jammed in the open position. In this case, the coolant will constantly move along a large circle. With such a malfunction in winter, the engine may not warm up to 80 degrees.

If, on the contrary, the engine heats very quickly, and there is a constant overheating, which can be determined from the temperature sensor and the frequent activation of the radiator fan, this is a sure sign that the valve does not open and does not let coolant into the radiator for cooling.

How to identify a malfunction

Determine whether replacement of the VAZ-2110 thermostat is necessary, you can do it yourself.

To do this, start and warm up the engine of the machine to the operating temperature at idle. Further in the engine compartment find the radiator pipes. Touch them. If the device is working, they both must be hot. This is evidence that the coolant circulates freely in the system.

If one of them turns out to be cold, then the valve has not opened, the thermostat did not work. But this does not mean that it needs to be changed immediately. For VAZ-2110, the replacement of the thermostat will be required only if the whole of its design is not suitable for further work. In other cases, you can do it with repairs.

Do not rush with the purchase of the entire device assembly. In VAZ-2110 vehicles, the thermostat can be replaced either completely or partially. In the latter case only the non-working thermoelement changes, and the case remains old. Naturally, if its internal surface has no traces of corrosion or scale, and there are no cracks and chips on the outside. The replacement of the thermostat of the VAZ-2110 thermostat is made after dismantling the entire assembly and its diagnostics.

We dismantle the thermostat

To remove the device, you must completely or partially drain the coolant. After this, it is necessary to remove the air filter housing and disconnect the hoses from the thermostat nozzles. Next, unscrew the three bolts that secure the body of the device to the cylinder head.

When the assembly is dismantled, unscrew the screws securing the thermostat cover, and remove the thermocouple.

Check the thermoelement

For verification, we need a tank with clean water, a liquid thermometer and a gas (electric) cooker or boiler. To check the thermocouple for operation, lower it into a container of cold water and start heating it. When the liquid is heated to 80.5-82 ° C, the pusher should move forward in the serviceable device. If this did not happen, then for your VAZ-2110 the replacement of the thermostat is a must.

In addition, inspect the body of the device and its nozzles. If they are all right, you can do only the purchase of a thermocouple.

When you purchase a new item, do not forget to check its serviceability by the method described above. After making sure that it works, fit it into the case and screw the cover. Now the thermostat assembly can be installed back.

To do this, secure it with three bolts on the cylinder head. Connect the pipes of the cooling system and fill the tank with antifreeze or antifreeze to the required level.

Start the engine and warm it up. Check the operation of the thermostat by touching the radiator hoses. If they are both hot, the device is working fine, and we did not work in vain.
