VAZ 2106 "Zhiguli" is a Soviet subcompact car with a body type "sedan", successor to the model VAZ 2103. The characteristics of the car fully met the requirements of that time, and the production of the VAZ 2106, the most popular and mass car, lasted for 30 years, from 1975 to 2005 year.

In the post-perestroika period, in 1998, the assembly of the model was transferred from Togliatti to Syzran, to the Roslada enterprise, and in 2001 the car began to be manufactured at a Ukrainian plant located in the city of Kherson. In the last three years, before decommissioning in December 2005, the VAZ 2106 was produced at the IzhAvto plant in the city of Izhevsk. In just 30 years of production, 4 million 300 thousand cars came off the assembly line.

Production start

The development of the model started in 1974, at the Design Center of the Volga Automobile Plant, under the index "21031". The project provided for a deep restyling of the already existing VAZ 2103. In the process of updating the troika, AvtoVAZ's management expected to reduce the car's prime cost by reducing the number of expensive chrome parts and introducing new lighting elements that meet European standards. Exterior VAZ 2106 designed for the latest design fashion - black plastic, which replaced all the chrome trim details. Radically changed front of the car: instead of the previous sparkling radiator grill was installed black matte module of hydrocarbon. The dual headlights received plastic "glasses", black "corners" appeared on the ends of the front and rear bumpers, which immediately became the calling card of the car, it was learned precisely by these details. The rear of the VAZ 2106 also refreshed: the trunk lid looked more stylish due to the horizontal lining, the rear lights were also trimmed with black plastic parts.

The development of the updated model was jealously watched by the Italians, since the VAZ cars are, in fact, a copy of Fiat, and they were licensed under the license in Togliatti in 1971. Modernization of the "troika" was successful: a new model with impeccable running characteristics, a high level of comfort and inexpensive service was obtained. At that time, the price of the "six" was quite high, but even so, the machine still did not go into free sale, there was a deficit. Special commissions distributed cars according to the order of the Ministry of Trade.

Updates

Designers intended to continue their improvements, but they were stopped by the production workers. To the car did not become too expensive, we decided to content ourselves with what has already been achieved. The interior of the VAZ 2106 also underwent a change: comfortable head restraints were fitted to the backs of the front seats, the door handles-armrests became more luxurious. The instrument panel was enriched with the rheostat of the panel lighting, the brake fluid level indicator, the windshield washer switch and the alarm button with red illumination. More expensive kits included a radio receiver, rear window heating, a red fog lamp attached under the rear bumper.

The engine for the car VAZ 2106 was installed brand "2103", with cylinders with a diameter of 79 mm and a working volume of 1.57 liters. The power of the engine was supposed to be increased from 76 to 80 hp, but the previous intake system allowed to do this, and it was necessary to leave everything as it is. The gearbox was adapted to the new engine: in the first three gears, the gear ratios were reduced and the direct transmission remained unchanged. The result of these improvements was quite satisfactory. Later, the power plant in the same set was installed on the model VAZ 2121 "Niva".

Originally, it was planned to name the new model VAZ 21031, so as not to break away from the basic "three", but the cardinally modified car was so different from its predecessor that it was assigned its own number. So in the family of AvtoVAZ appeared the brand VAZ 2106. The first "six" came off the assembly line in December 1975, and the serial production began on February 21, 1976.

Carburettors: which is better

In the production process, the VAZ 2106 was constantly improved. Since 1980, the car began to install the carburetor "Ozone" instead of the economical "Weber". The new carburetor turned out to be constructively unsuccessful, since it was designed to save fuel at the same power. But, as it turned out, there are no miracles in the automotive world, and "Ozone" with some of its most complicated adjustments somehow did not take root. Fortunately, the proven single-chamber carburetor of the Italian Eduard Weber, was produced in the range of spare parts, and every owner of the VAZ 2106 and other VAZ brands could buy it in the car dealer if desired.

Improvements also touched the exterior details of the "six", in the first place, the moldings were finalized, which now ended in black plastic tips. In the course of the matter, the edging of the wheel arches was abolished. The obsolete vent grilles on the rear pillars were replaced with new ones, from the VAZ 2105. The undercarriage was also improved, the rear brakes were replaced by the same "five" units that were much more efficient. In 1986, the VAZ 2105 borrowed a transmission.

Economy mode

I must say that since 1987 the AvtoVAZ management has persistently pursued a policy of cheapening the "six": the red electrophones of the door ends have been replaced with simple cataphores, the relay of the red signal of the parking brake blinked off. The chrome linings of body gutters disappeared. The wheel caps were abolished, the interior also "suffered", stopped installing panels with imitation "under the tree." In 1993, even the side moldings were canceled, but the car began to look like bare, and the chrome lining was returned.

Export modification

Economy mode did not affect VAZ 2106, exported, and small series intended for sale on the domestic market, with the "Lux" type equipment. In this version, the car received a non-contact ignition system, the best carburetor of that period - Solex, halogen headlamps, velor seat upholstery and door shields, and improved head restraints. The modification was produced with a motor of 1500 cubes, bumpers from the VAZ 2105 model, a reinforced generator and a five-speed gearbox. The modification of the VAZ 21064, which was exported, besides the listed accessories, was equipped with exclusive bumpers with integrated turn signals and an improved electric circuit. The export version was equipped with a five-speed transmission with a reduced gear ratio, which significantly reduced fuel consumption. The salon of export cars was made using expensive materials, in some cases, by order of foreign dealers, the seats were covered with natural leather, which significantly increased the cost of the car.

Popularity

VAZ "Six" in the first seven years of production remained stably the most prestigious model in its class, being considered an example of reliability and high level of comfort. Thanks to its reputation, the VAZ 2106 from the late eighties to the 2000's was one of the most popular among Russians with average incomes, despite the fact that the model is already outdated, and the build quality left much to be desired.
