The Traveling Palace (Tver): address and description of the monument

Travel palaces, as is known, were built to rest the royal family and other noble persons who went on long trips. There were no charter flights and cars at that time, so the authorities needed to spend more than one day to get from one city to another. Of course, they needed to provide proper comfort during rest and spending the night on the road.

In total, 14 such complexes were built in the Russian Empire. Only nine of them have survived to our time. And one of those is the Travel Palace (Tver), a photo of which you can see below. It is located on the bank of the Volga, within the historical core of the city (on Cathedral Square). By the way, his first guest was Catherine II.

The Travel Palace (Tver) was built in the 1760s in the classical style, designed by Peter Nikitin. However, the experienced eye of the architect sees in this structure with two pavilions features and elements also baroque. Today the building is an architectural monument and a real decoration of Tver.

It is not difficult to get to the palace. At the main railway station, take tram No. 5 or No. 11 or take a taxi No. 52.

History of the architectural complex

The Imperial Travel Palace in Tver was erected on the site where the bishop's house had previously stood. The latter was burned down by fire, and local authorities initially planned to restore it. But later, when there was a need to build a Travel Palace, they decided that there was no better place to be found in the city.

The builders already knew then that the palace was being built for the great Empress Catherine, so they worked for glory. According to the project of the chief architect, the building was a huge central building with two outbuildings on each side. In the palace was arranged a magnificent hall, and in the east wing there were rooms for the empress. In the opposite part there was a library and a house church. The stables and sheds appeared a little later.

Catherine II stayed in this palace. However, after that, it loses its former importance. Soon the palace in Tver becomes the residence of Princess Ekaterina Pavlovna and Geogg Oldenburg, her husband. The building served as a place of inspiration for many poets, political and cultural figures. So, he was very fond of Zhukovsky, Glinka, scholar Nikolai Karamzin.

During the fighting of the Great Patriotic War, the architectural complex was significantly damaged. Immediately after the end of the war, the reconstruction of the palace began, which was carried out under the guidance of I.E. Bondarenko.

Restoration of the palace

The Travel Palace (Perm) has become very dilapidated over the last 60 years. Therefore, in 2012, funds were allocated for its capital restoration. To date, all the work has almost been completed.

So, the walls and ceilings in the building are completely ready. Interiors of the palace promise to decorate with the 16th coats of arms of the county towns of the region. In St. Petersburg must produce two chic chandeliers especially for the Tver Palace. But small lamps are made at a local glass factory. In general, the interior works in the palace have already been completed. Soon, new items of furniture and interior should be delivered.

Restorers significantly transformed the main entrance hall of the palace. From the old furniture there were only four columns, two more were replaced by plaster columns. Granite decor elements for the lobby were also made in "North Palmira", but the floors were brought from abroad. When the ceremonial steps were changed, they found fragments of authentic German tiles. Later they were used to recreate the original pattern and coverage tones.
