History of the theater

A successful and rich city in the second half of the 19th century was Odessa. The Russian theater appeared at this time. The first building was wooden. In 1873 it burned down. But Odessa did not imagine itself without a theater. Artists continued to speak, but play them come on the stage, as in the booth.

A year later the Russian Theater was reborn. It happened thanks to the merchant A. Velikanov. He adapted to the theater his room on the street Greek, which used to be a bread shop. But the merchant A. Velikanov was short-lived an entrepreneur. Soon the economic crisis forced the philanthropist to yield spectacle to his companion and neighbor - F. Rafailovich. It was he who coined the name of the Russian Theater.

The first performance on the new stage took place in 1875, in the fall. In the late 19th century, guest performers often performed here. Among them were: Ludwig Barnay, Sarah Bernhard, Panas Saksagansky, Ernst Possartu and others. In September 1906, the new building of the theater burned down. But soon in its place was rebuilt a new one.

In the first years after the establishment of Soviet power, several different theaters were opened in Odessa. The most successful of them was "Massodrama". Soon he was connected with another troupe, and the united theater was called the Odessa Russian Drama Theater. And in 1927 he was given the status of state. The theater was headed by AL Gripich at that time. His teacher was the legendary and famous Vsevolod Meyerhold.

In 1941, when the war broke out, the theater was disbanded. But the scene was not empty. Here the popular chanson Peter Leshchenko toured many other artists. After the city was liberated from the German invaders, the theater began to work again. The repertoire included new performances. In the year of 1964, the Russian drama was directed by V. Bortko. He brought a lot of new to the life of the team. The repertoire was supplemented by new large-scale productions. In 1996 the troupe was renewed. Here came the stars of the operetta. Then the first musical was staged. Today, the theater cooperates with directors even with world renown.
