The veiled is what? Hints and Euphemisms

We all use in our speech various hints and euphemisms, for social life does not have to truth. Well, not that our life is all lies, decay and decay, but a person with a person, as a rule, can not be frank. There are different reasons for this, so today we will consider the adjective "veiled". It will be an interesting conversation.

What is a veil?

The noun "veil" has three meanings:

  1. Thin transparent matter.
  2. A mesh attached to a woman's hat and covering her face.
  3. Darkening in the dark areas of the developed film or photoimage. This is a special term.

In the context of the topic, we will only be interested in the second meaning of the word, because the veiled is deliberately hidden. The face is also hidden under the veil, especially for some reasons.

Euphemisms and Tolerance

Euphemisms are expressions that do not cause public censure and are a substitute for the more rude or indecent. In other words, euphemisms are veiled words.

For example, we say "he is a little drunk" instead of "he got drunk to insensibility." We do not use stronger expressions out of respect for the reader. Or "he feels unwell" instead of "he has a terrible hangover."

In general, euphemisms penetrate all spheres of our life, and this is due to the fact that philanthropy and Western trends teach us to be tolerant and tolerant. We no longer say the words "old age", "illness", "death", by the way, about the eternal companion of life. The researcher-thanatologist Sergei Ryazantsev points out that in all languages there are softer substitutions for the verb "to die." And it's no accident. Death is still as mysterious as it was many centuries ago. We do not really know anything about it, but people still terribly frighten people, and religions do not cope with the basic social order yet - to remove a person's horror before disappearing in a stream of nothingness.

With death everything is clear, but old, sick, fat and frail has become indecent quite recently, besides, certain special names have appeared for people of diverse ethnic groups living in different countries.

Therefore, we can say that the language itself becomes slightly veiled, this, in turn, sometimes blurs the meaning of the statement.

Social life has to mitigate the impact

Imagine a situation where a person is sent to retirement. If the leader has a heart, then in this case he finds himself in an awkward situation: on the one hand, he must send a person to a well-deserved rest, but one can not say directly about the reason for the dismissal, if it concerns age. And here approaches of this kind begin: "Vasily Kuzmich, and you are not tired? Maybe it's worth devoting more time to family, grandchildren? "A smart person will understand that a reduction is coming, and if he respects himself and the leader, he will go without restless words to rest.

Although a hint of unpleasant, even veiled, is something that leaves a sense of absurdity or disgust.

For example, when a person is fired, sometimes only interjections and heavy sighs speak about this. But people understand what they mean.

Do I have to use winks and puzzles?

This is a difficult question. On the one hand, politically correct newspeaches obscure the meaning. For example, when we call a sick person "special", then, on the one hand, we soften rudeness, and on the other hand, it becomes unclear how he distinguished himself.

But if such changes do not harm the actual side of the matter, then there is no reason not to use the language veil. For example, tell your father or grandfather that he is "aged", not "old." Such a transformation of the essence of the matter will not change, but relatives will not be so insulted to realize that time, unfortunately, is inexorable, they leave their strength and, in general, take their years.

We hope that we managed to explain what it means to be "veiled", that is, we did not obscure the meaning of an already unknown word.
