260 km from the city of St. Petersburg, on the river Svir stretched fabulous village of Verhnye Mandrogi. The village and its inhabitants are unique! Several families in this village are engaged in various folk crafts: draw, weave, sew.

This is the first of the dolls that had a clearly marked chest line. The Vepsian doll belongs to the pagan cult of the mother and is performed in a "no sewing" manner. One of her varieties is "the girl-woman". This is a ritual doll, which in olden times was always given to the newlyweds.

Travnitsa is another hypostasis. In the clothes of the doll, as well as in her hair, the needlewoman laid various fragrant herbs - mint, thyme, oregano, and then laid at the bedside of the patient.

A lot of toys were made before church and other holidays: on the Palm Sunday - Verbnitsa, Filippovka to the Philippine post. Do not forget the handymen and the decoration of houses with dolls, symbolizing the owners: with brooms and sticks, buckets and pots.

Iconography

Arkhangelsk roe deer today traditionally bake for the New Year and Christmas, then with good wishes to be presented to relatives and friends. Gifts are not eaten, but put in a prominent place in the house. There they will stay until next year. There is a belief that the more each family presents a roebuck, the more prosperity will be spilled on it. Hence the proverb was born: "You give a goat - you get a profit in the house."

In the smithy, among the heat and metal dominates the smith. Getting to visit him, everyone can buy something for themselves. It can be like a small souvenir, and a gorgeous knife, whose handle is crowned with a mammoth tusk. All his work the blacksmith forges equally well and with his soul. Clothes made of natural material are practical, warm and unique.

Tourist village does not cease to amaze! With the seamstress there is a craftsman next to her, who makes linen clothes, table and bed linens. Experiments conducted by scientists have proved that each of the natural materials has its own energy, and flax possesses the strongest. Such things are able to give its owner peace and balance, concentration and dimensionality.

This material is able to partially neutralize the electromagnetic radiation to which people who spend a lot of time on the computer are exposed. And for them the best solution is to purchase a linen shirt or trousers.

Birchbark

Rest in Russia can be active! And the proof is the birch bark who lives with his wife in the village. The wife of the birchbark draws on clay, birch bark or wood. Traditional northern painting gives her works a unique author's charm, it is noted by many.

Potter

The village of Upper Mandrogi can boast of a master of ceramics. Many masterpieces of potter come to learn how to work with clay. And the age range is quite huge: from one and a half to 80 years. Visitors to the village spoke warmly of the time spent in the workshop.

The main thing that a beginner should get used to is clay, its structure, understanding how to work with this material. At the first lesson the master tells and helps his students to form the workpiece correctly, so as not to break the intended form. In his demonstration classes, the potter demonstrates his craft, teaching the guests of the village. One half of the work is performed by the master, and the student will finish it.

His master works mainly with white clay. Some products must be dried within a month, so that later they become fireproof and durable.

Jeweler

He is engaged in the manufacture of pendants, bracelets, earrings and rings. More complex models the jeweler first performs from wax, and then embodies in metal. If the product is uncomplicated, it is immediately made of metal.

Jewelery work is a multi-step process that requires a huge amount of time. But not every job is easy - some products need to be performed in several stages, in order to then connect the disparate parts into a single whole.

Guilloche

Holiday Village "Upper Mandrogi" offers its guests such an interesting modern art, as guilloche, or burning through the fabric.

This type of tissue art appeared less than 40 years ago in Russia, when in 1980 the architect Zina Kotenkova, late, burned a hole on her beloved blouse with an iron.

Guilloche is a welding and cutting out of artificial fabrics (crepe-satin, gabardine, brocade, artificial silk) of various ornamental details. Work is carried out using a thin hot needle, which is inserted into the device for burning through wood.

Today, the master has a patented technology of manufacturing on wooden billets work in the guilloche technique. Caskets and dolls, Easter eggs and cutlery - all this is decorated with semiprecious natural stones or Swarovski rhinestones. Many of the master's works are in collections in the homes of Russia and abroad.

The appearance of the village

The first ancient settlements on the Svir River appeared in the distant past, during the Veps. This is a small nationality, which has traditionally lived in certain regions of Russia. Veps helped in servicing the trade route passing through the Svir River. Gradually the village became prosperous. Here they began to extract granite, produce iron, build ships and trade. But in the war of 1941-1945, the village, which included 29 yards, was burnt to the ground, and people were forced to seek refuge in other villages.

In 1996, the village of Verkhnie Mandrogi of the Leningrad Region was recreated by artists who were able to turn it into a museum of Russian architecture under the open sky. About 100 people permanently reside in the village, and since its restoration the inhabitants have been added: indigenous people aged from 1 to 7 years have appeared. In the village there is a kindergarten and a school. Here they bake bread on their own according to old recipes and, probably, therefore it turns out so delicious.

The Museum of Vodka has about 2,800 copies. Every visitor has the opportunity to exchange their bottle of vodka for the same, but produced in the city of St. Petersburg.

Numerous entertainments are designed for families with children, employees of companies traveling for corporate holidays for several days. Many noted that the children really like it in the Mandroges. There are also tours for one day, which start at 8 am and end at 9 pm.

Where to live?

If the tour is not chosen for one day, then the question arises: where to live during the rest? For visitors to the ethnographic center in the Upper Mandrogh there are several options for accommodation.

Manor - consists of two floors with three bedrooms on the second. The first floor has a large hall with a fireplace, a kitchen, a billiard room and a room for security.

Each of the rooms in the estate is equipped with a bathroom.

At home - each of them has two floors.

A house on a hill is a home for a small family of three people or a couple. It is furnished with colored furniture, and can also please the presence of a stove, laid out manually by tiles.

The house of the carver is suitable for families with children. It was built by the national artist Gusev YI. Internal elements of the interior of the house were also performed by him: a chandelier in the form of a fire-bird, a ladder in the form of grapes. In the house there is a collection of ancient samovars and irons.

House-terem - three families with children can live here. He impresses with his complex figured roof and large open verandah.

The house-casket stands out among its brethren with an impressive copper roof that glitters in the sun. Ideal for families with children or couples.

The elegant house is able to accommodate 2 couples with children. It has a harmonious interior, in which several eras have intertwined: modern, retro (represented by an old gramophone) and a distant past embodied in the painting "under the lubok".

The lace house is easily recognizable thanks to the carved decoration of the facades. Large, so courageously take 2-3 married couples with children.

Painted house - one-story hut for a small family. The decorators were able to completely recreate the original interior design of the house. All pieces of furniture and interior are of historical value.

The townhouse is a 2-level apartment for convinced urban residents, equipped with verandas on each floor.

The inn is among the first buildings built here. It consists of 14 rooms and a common hall for gatherings.

The hotel has 33 rooms, of which 5 - for couples, and the rest have 2 single beds. The interiors of each room are copyrighted, so there are not two similar ones.

The village of Verkhnie Mandrogi has different tourists' reviews: someone liked the rest very much, and some were dissatisfied with the time spent here. Yet not every citizen will appreciate such entertainment. But in one thing everyone agreed: nowhere else will you find such a nature and such a handicraft settlement.
