The status of the groggy boxers

During the boxing competition, athletes may receive blows to different parts of the head. Depending on the site of impact, there may be conditions of varying severity with specific neurological symptoms. By conventional classification, they are defined as groggy, knockdown or knockout.

What's the Difference

The state of groggy ("intoxication") occurs when an unexpected blow is received in the lower jaw and the concussion of the vestibular apparatus, manifesting itself mainly in the form of dizziness.

When knockdown, consciousness is more affected, which is expressed in loss of orientation, impaired coordination of movements and dizziness. There may be ringing in the ears. This state lasts for a few seconds.

Knockout is the most serious pathological condition, which is accompanied by disorientation and loss of consciousness. Most often it occurs due to concussion of the brain when struck in the temple or bridge of the nose. Sometimes the trauma affects the cerebellum, the stem part of the brain and the ganglion of the vagus nerve (when it hits the lower jaw). Then there is a fall and a faint.

Grogg's condition - what is it?

With a strong and sharp impact, a rapid movement and sudden fixation of the head ("discarding") occurs in the lower jaw, as a result of which the brain is "imprinted" in the occipital bone in the region of the occipital orifice. In parallel with this, a free space is formed between the body of the brain and its shell in the forehead region. This process can be accompanied by internal bleeding.

In the nape of the occiput there is a movement of the cerebellum and a slight displacement of the brainstem to the lower part of the skull, which can injure it. The fluid inside the ventricles of the brain is shaken, temporarily blocking vegetative nerve centers and pressing on the reticular formation.

These processes lead to an instant disconnection of consciousness and a decrease in muscle tone. The state of the groggy is a manifestation at the level of the psyche of neurological changes with such a microtrauma.

The strategy of behavior under the "Guggi"

The state of the groggy lasts for a few seconds, but this is enough to allow the athlete to miss one more - the decisive blow, and lose the fight. Often the referee, noticing this situation, stops the fight.

For the boxer, who got into the "groggy", it is better to take a short break to get back to normal. Therefore, his task - to try not to give the enemy the mind that he relaxed, and for some time to retreat, keeping a long distance.

Sometimes the state of the groggy is too deep to be actively defended. Then it is more expedient to close, having entered the clinch. In this case, a blind stand will help, too. And if there is no way to keep the balance, you can go down on one knee. The main thing is to curb your temperament and not succumb to the provocation of the enemy, revealing for his attacks.

When the resulting blow knocks the athlete to the floor, not everything is lost. This unpleasant fact should be used to restore strength and calmly wait until the referee counts to eight. If you get up earlier, when everything floats before your eyes, and your muscles do not enter into tone - the loss can not be avoided.

How not to get into the "groggy"

The blow that can lead to the state of the groggy must be not so much strong as unexpected. Coaches have long noticed that it is a strong counter strike, when the opponent does not have time to defend himself, is able to cause one of the states of impaired consciousness.

Therefore, in the tactics of real knockout masters there are always two elements: disguise and an unexpected, knocking down blow. To keep the surprise effect, the boxer should have in his arsenal not one favorite device, but several options. In addition, he must be able to prepare the situation for a decisive blow, creating a model for the opponent's stereotypical expectation of his actions.

That's why it's so important before the fight to carefully study the tactics of fighting with your opponent on video. This will significantly reduce the likelihood of unexpected actions on his part, which will prevent his attempts to introduce someone into the state of the groggy. The importance of this fact can not be underestimated.

The state of the groggy is a common phenomenon in a boxing match. But here very much to the place will be the expression: "If warned - means, armed." Even "catching" a blow to the jaw, you can keep parity by applying the appropriate tactics and waiting for the moment of dizziness and weakness to respond to the enemy accordingly.
