Fevronia and Peter of Murom are revered as Christian saints since 1547. In life, these Orthodox miracle workers did not perform any monastic feats and were not subjected to suffering for the faith. According to the chronicle of Erasmus, Peter and Fevronia lived in the city of Murom in the early 13th century. As Erasmus writes, Prince Peter, who ruled in Murom a few years before he took the throne in 1203, fell ill with leprosy. No doctor of that time could heal this disease, of course, could not. In despair Peter turned to God with prayer.

After a while, as the legend tells, the Lord sent a prophetic dream upon him. In the night vision, the prince was discovered that only the maiden Fevronia, the daughter of a beekeeper, who lives near Yaroslavl, can cure him. Of course, the prince immediately sent messengers for the healer.

Arrived in Murom Fevronia promised to heal the prince. However, at the same time she set the condition for him. He could recover, according to her, only by marrying her. Of course, the prince assumed such obligations, deciding, however, not to fulfill them. Fevronia smeared Petra with honey, but, seeing his cunning, left one of the scabs dry. After a while the illness of the prince passed. But soon after that rumen, which Fevronia did not treat, returned again. The ruler understood then his mistake. He sent messengers for Fevronia again. And this time, healed, he married his savior.

Beloved wife

Later the prince continued to wisely rule such a glorious city as Moore. Where are the relics of Peter and Fevronia, nowadays many Orthodox Christians would like to know. After all, saints are very famous and often help true believers in the desire to save or make a marriage. At the same time, the marriage of a ruler to a commoner provoked a mixed reaction in society. In the end, the nobles rebelled and drove out their ruler.

Of course, without a prince in the city immediately began feud. Exhausted by constant skirmishes and bloodshed, the boyars decided to call Peter back. The prince agreed to persuade the ambassadors. Fevronia and Peter returned with humility to the city and ruled them to their old age. At the end of life, both saints took monastic vows. The fact that they will die on the same day, Peter and Fevronia swore to each other even during the reign. To the monks, they willed after death put them in one coffin.

Relics of saints

Fevronia and Peter died in one day, according to legend, June 25, 1228. However, the monks did not dare fulfill their will. After all, it was not customary to bury in one grave those who accepted monasticism. The relics of Peter and Fevronia in Murom were even carried several times in different temples. However, by the will of the Lord, miraculously they always appeared side by side. Eventually, the saints were put together in one coffin with a thin partition as it was bequeathed by themselves.

Peter and Fevronia were canonized in 1547. Having identified them as saints, the Church recorded the dignity and sanctity of marriage, whose vows in the case of these miracle-workers were no less than monastic. The saints were buried in the hometown of Murom. At the site of their last reassurance, the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos was erected after a while.

Where are the relics today?

To my great regret, after the revolution (in 1921), the relics of Peter and Fevronia in Murom were seized and put on display in the local museum of local lore, in an anti-religious exposition. In the 70s the shrine was moved to the vault. Returned to this revered by all Orthodox relics of the Church only in the early 90's.
