It all started with sickness. In 1870, the artist Feodor Vasiliev severely gets cold, and doctors put him a terrible for those times diagnosis - "tuberculosis." For some time the canvas was kept by the close friend of the artist, Kramskoy. Then Prince Nikolai Konstantinovich wanted to buy the painting, but Pavel Tretyakov outstripped it . It is there, in the Tretyakov Gallery, and the painting is still to this day. As for Fyodor Vasiliev, after the creation of his northern masterpiece, only one year remained. The artist worked on the works for a long time and tensely, completely exhausting himself. Naturally, this did not contribute to recovery, and by the end of September 1873 Vasiliev had retired to a different world.
