The drug "Buserelin-Long" is an artificial analogue of natural GnRH hormone. The action of this agent is based on competitive binding directly to the receptors of the pituitary cells and subsequent short-term increase in the level of sex steroids in the plasma, which ultimately leads to complete blocking of the so-called gonadotropic function of the pituitary gland. As a result of the application of the drug "Buserelin-Long" suppression of the synthesis of hormones directly in the gonads is provided, manifested in the form of a decrease in testosterone levels (before postcastration) in men and a decrease in the content of estradiol in the blood to post-menopausal characteristics in female patients. In the first case, one can speak of pharmacological castration, the second one - about postmenopause or ovarioectomy.
This drug is currently available as a lyophilizate, specifically designed for the preparation of a suspension. The composition of this drug as the main element is about 4 mg buserelin acetate. Auxiliary components are carmellose sodium, a copolymer of glycolic and dl-lactic acids, polysorbate-80 and d-mannitol.
As for the area of use of this drug, the "Buserelin-Long" agent is prescribed for the treatment of breast cancer and hormone-dependent prostate cancer.
