The Chulym River - tributaries and sources

The Siberian rivers are great and full of water: Lena, Ob, Yenisei, Amur. Each of them crosses the cold part of Russia from the extreme south to the extreme North, and the Amur flows from the heart of the continent to the east and flows into the Pacific Ocean. In length, the latter occupies the fifth place in the world, the Ob - the eighth and the Yenisei - the tenth.
The Ob River originates in the Altai and crosses the whole of Western Siberia from south to north, falling into the coldest sea of the Arctic Ocean - Kara. It collects water from the basin of a huge area, which carries flowing streams into it. In this case, they themselves are included in the list of large bodies of water. One of its tributaries is the Chulym River.

Geography of the river

Chulym has a considerable length, quite a bit under 2,000 km. To be more precise, the length of the water flow is 1895 km. Although in some official sources there is a somewhat different figure - 1,799 km. 134 thousand km ² - this is the area of the basin, which includes the Chulym River.

The source of the watercourse is in Khakassia. On its way, it crosses the territory of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Tomsk Region. Two mountain rivers - White Iyus and Black Iyus, flowing along Khakassia, merging, give rise to Chulym. Literally through 50 with a little kilometers the river gets to the territory of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, along which it flows for 1100 km. On all this path, up to Achinsk, it behaves like a mountain stream. First, the river Chulym (photo below) is rapidly converging with the Yenisei. And logically, she should have fallen into it. But the barrier to this was 7.5 km of rocks, which did not allow flow to the Yenisei. About 60 km Chulym flows almost in parallel with it, and then it turns to the north and further to the west towards Ob.

In its lower and middle currents the reservoir flows among the taiga forests and marshes. In some places the river makes a fuss, making intricate pretzels, forming a lot of old men, bays and sleeves.

Fairytale legend

About why the Chulym River does not flow into the Yenisei, one of the local peoples even has a fairy tale. As if the mischievous Yenisei waterman decided to try what the water in the Ob is. He reached the river along different small rivers and channels, and when he got to the right place, it was already winter. And the Yenisei water had to dive into the ice-hole. Obskaya water he did not like - the smell of a scent. While he was moving to the polynyas, his beard was frozen to ice. He jerked watery, but does not let his hair coat, and it hurts. He began to call for help Obskoy water. And he began to haggle: give, says, such a good flow as the river Chulym, then let go. It was a pity to give the Yenisei water to give such a treasure, but there's nothing to do. I gave it back to return to the Yenisei. Since then, Chulym, who was already very close to the Yenisei, has approached the Ob River in order to merge with it into a single stream. I bought them water.

Fishing on the river

There are no large cities on the banks of Chulym up to Achinsk. There is also no shipping, since in this place this stream flows like a mountain river. And here he is rich in aquatic animals. Therefore, it is here that fishing on the Chulym River is the most notable. It is on this site that not only the usual pike, isl, lin, burbot, roach and crucian carp are found, but also pure Siberian taimen and grayling, lenok and nelma. And in the waters of the reservoir there are sterlets and sturgeons.

And what makes the flow difficult for navigation, becomes just a paradise for various species of river fish. The Chulym River (Krasnoyarsk Territory) is popular as a place where a fisherman can take his soul and catch very large specimens of different species. And in this sense this watercourse is considered to be the Siberian fish Eldorado. Therefore, it can be placed on a par with the Volga delta or the lake and the river of Karelia. It will not cause much surprise to catch a pike weighing about 10 kg or seven kilograms of pike perch.

Fauna and flora

The Chulym River not only abounds in fish, but is surrounded by the mighty Siberian forests, where together with the pine and fir trees grow fir and larch, and even cedars. Throughout the flow of the travelers will enjoy the beautiful scenery of virgin and habitable places. Perhaps, we will be able to see representatives of the wild fauna of these places, since forests abound with bears, deer, badgers, chipmunks. In the local rivers live beavers and otters.

Tributaries

Behind Achinsk Chulym flows along the plain. The river here is meandering and is broken into many sleeves, which makes it difficult to pass ships. At this point Chulym takes enough deep-water tributaries and itself becomes wide and deep. Among the water bodies flowing into the Ob on the right, it is the largest.

More than a hundred "internal" streams - the Chulym River is so rich. The tributaries that enter it have absolutely different lengths - from 50 km to 250 km. The longest are White and Black Iyus. Some of the merging streams have no name, because they are so small. Among them there are also old men and channels.

The legend of the appearance of the river

In these places lives a small Turkic people - chulymtsy. The name of the river is also of Turkic origin. According to legend, the tribes who lived in these places celebrated the coming of spring each year. On this day it is customary to light bonfires and jump through the fire. And then once the inhabitants of these places have a particularly large fire. And the next morning they found a lot of water on the place of the fire from the melted snow. And then the inhabitants began to kindle a lot of lights, so that all the snow came down. But that was not enough. Then this Turkic people turned to the god of fire to help them. He heard their prayers and created a volcano that spewed out lava. And then far from the place where this people lived, the water from the melted snow accumulated. So the river Chulym appeared, which, in fact, means "running snow".

Rest on the river
