The capital of Suriname is Paramaribo

In the north of the "flaming" continent - South America, washed by the waters of the Atlantic, there is a small state of Suriname. A country where barren sands and dry savannahs coexist with equatorial wet forests.

The indigenous tribes of these lands were the Caribs and Arawaks. Since the seventeenth century, plantations of sugar cane and coffee have been planted here, on which the then enslavers, the Dutch, used the work of African slaves. In the sixties of the nineteenth century, slavery was abolished, and immigrants from Indonesia and India began to come to the colony. And in 1975 the country became independent.

The main city and the largest port of the state is the capital of Paramaribo, built on the Suriname river of the same name, with a population of more than 200 thousand people.

It was founded by the French colonists in the middle of the seventeenth century on the site of a small Indian village, making the capital of the colony. However, after a dozen years, the capital of Suriname was captured by the Dutch. In general, very much in Paramaribo is associated with the influence of Dutch culture - houses, architectural structures, canals.

The capital of Suriname is a kind of historical monument dedicated to the struggle of the country for independence. It was constantly destroyed, but every time, albeit slowly, was restored. Since the colonial period, it has preserved only a few old churches and buildings that are under the protection of UNESCO.

In the history of Suriname, there are many vivid examples of the cruelty of slaveholders and colonialists, from which practically all the peoples of South America suffered. The initial period of the independence of the country was also marked by the flourishing of the drug trade and corruption of the state leadership, which does not pay any attention to its development.

The capital of Suriname is the main transport hub and the center of commerce and industry. Through this port, everything that the country is rich in is exported: bauxites and aluminum, sugar cane and wood, citrus fruits and rice.

The capital of Suriname is a very green city. Paramaribo is literally completely planted with vegetation, including evergreen trees. And in the surrounding densely equatorial forests one can find even pumas, monkeys, jaguars, tapirs.

The name Paramaribo from the language of the Indian tribe tupi-guarani is translated as "city of great water". Today, not only the descendants of immigrants who came here in the late nineteenth century live here, but also Creoles, Indians, Indonesians, Europeans and Indians.

The historic center of Paramaribo combines the traditions of many cultures, so here peacefully neighbor mosques, Roman Catholic church and synagogues.

Since the capital of Suriname is not very rich in historical sights, tourists are attracted by various extreme entertainments and various kinds of water sports, for which there are great opportunities here. For example, a route is very popular from Paramaribo up the river current of Suriname to the city of Mallobi and the reservoir, in the vicinity of which there is a beautiful national park Braunsberg, with waterfalls Leo and Irene.

This distant country is familiar to the Russian resident from Aguzarova's song about the "city of the morning dawn" - the capital of Suriname.
