Liepaja (Latvia): attractions, their photos and description

Liepaja is a city located in the south-west of Latvia, in the middle of the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. From the mainland, the settlement is surrounded by the Tosmarsky and Liepaja lakes. "City of Musicians" - that's how Liepaja is often mentioned in the people. Latvia is a country with developed culture and tourism, and it is in this region that a whole series of music festivals and other interesting events take place every year in the warm season. Liepaja is the third largest city in the country, and also one of the unofficial tourist capitals of Latvia. Tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy beach holidays and explore the local sights.

Glorious history of a good city

In historical documents for the first time the mention of the settlement of Livs in a given locality is found in 1253. The year 1418 became tragic in the history of the city: then Liepaja was burnt by the Lithuanian army, and if the sources are to be believed, no one left alive from the indigenous people. His new history begins in 1625. At that time the city belonged to the possessions of the Duke of Courland William. After the end of the Swedish-Polish war trade is developing rapidly, and already at the end of the 17th century the Liepāja port was built. At the same time, the canal was dug, in the 19th century the history of the city began as an important center of international representations. This function continues today: today there are 13 embassies of different countries. During the USSR, Liepaja (Latvia today) becomes a strategic military facility. There is a version that the local port was considered as one of the best bases for training military naval operations.

Beaches and natural attractions

The city beach is a real pride of the city of Liepaja, it is considered the best on the whole Baltic coast. The sand is very shallow and golden, in some places the width of the coast reaches about 70 meters. Along the beach there is a park Jurmalas. Its history begins with this natural object from the middle of the XIX century. Today its total area is about 70 hectares. More than 140 species of bushes and trees peacefully coexist here. One of the interesting modern attractions is the giant drums set in the Seaside Park, which remind us that the life of the city is inextricably linked with music. Many tours to Latvia include a one-day trip to this unique nature reserve. Do not forget to visit this place if you have a rest nearby.

Places for walks

Acquaintance with the new city is useful and pleasant to begin with a sightseeing tour-walking through the historical center. The heart of Liepaja is the area of roses. Once there was a market, but after its reorganization, the city government decided to equip the liberated territory with a recreation area and plant roses. About 500 bushes were planted, the last time the reconstruction was carried out in 2000. Now the flowerbed looks even more impressive, and along its edges one can consider the signs of twin cities of such a blossoming city as Liepaja. Latvia is a very clean country, which treats carefully the preservation of historical monuments and the health of citizens. One of the important places for residents and visitors is Tirgonu street, whose alternative name is pedestrian prospect. Here are opened a variety of cafes, souvenir shops and photo workshops. If you decide to have lunch or buy something, then do not forget that the official currency of Latvia today is no longer local lats, but euros. The highlight of this street is a complete ban on the movement of vehicles, this is a completely pedestrian zone, hence the popular name.

Promenade of the city - Promenade

Another place for walking walks and photo shoots is the city embankment, or Promenade. In Soviet times, this zone was closed to civilians. Therefore, there are no interesting historical monuments and rich decor. Today, the Promenade is a public place that everyone can visit. In recent years, the city government has paid sufficient attention to the improvement of this zone. There are already places for recreation, in the summer period flower beds are broken. There are cafes, souvenir shops, as well as a fish market, where you can buy freshly caught fish inexpensively.

Attractive waterfront due to the scenic views. From here you can clearly see the sea, the port, ships and yachts, as well as a grand fountain. One of the main adornments of the Promenade is the amber clock. There are rumors that they required about 50 liters of amber to create them. The history of the creation of this object is also interesting: in 2003 an action was held, within the framework of which the townspeople donated their amber for the creation of new city clocks.

Orthodox church of St. Anne

One of the most interesting architectural monuments in Liepaja is the church of St. Anne. The temple is considered one of the oldest in the city - the first mention of it dates back to 1508 year. The church is located on the Kurshu square, near the Petertürgus market. Repeatedly the building was rebuilt, and its appearance changed. Attention deserves and interior decoration. In 1997, the main altar of the church celebrated its tercentenary. This element of the church interior was created by Niklas Sephrens Jr., it is decorated with wood carvings and executed in the Baroque style, characteristic of its period. The Church of St. Anne is a real pride of the city. Liepaja (Latvia) is rich in monuments of architecture and religious buildings, and in the whole country there is no second temple like this one.

Interesting places of interest

If we talk about the religious religious sites of the city, we can not ignore the cathedral of St. Nicholas. According to legend, the first stone for its construction was really laid personally by the Emperor Nicholas II. A special interest is the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity: it still has one of the largest mechanical organs in Europe.

The city of Liepaja has various attractions, you want new impressions - go on a trip to the real prison. Karosta is a correctional institution located in the northern part of the city. At the end of the XIX century, there was a navy, and the prison was used to maintain discipline among employees. Today, tourists are invited to participate in theatrical performances and personally with torches in their hands to bypass the gloomy corridors and feel themselves in the role of a prisoner. Interesting places to visit: Zivu street (there are many interesting architectural buildings here) and the house of Peter the Great (Madame Hoyer hotel) in Kungu street.
