Spring of 1945. Another storm of Berlin and Koenigsberg, ahead of the march to Prague and the war with Japan, and numerous design offices subordinated to the Soviet People's Commissariat of Tank Industry are already beginning to think about a peaceful life. In addition to the transition to the design of equipment for the national economy, the developers were tasked with eliminating the structural deficiencies (OVN) of tanks, both produced and in the design stage. So what happened? Why did the combat vehicles that had passed half a Europe cease to suit the Soviet leadership and the military? And everything is very simple. At the front, during the period of active hostilities, the tank life time averaged a week, so it was unprofitable to lay down a resource of mechanisms far exceeding this period. In an extreme case, if the car was lucky not to burn in the first-second attack, it was possible to replace the aggregates that had exhausted their resource. But in peacetime, the tank must be operated for at least five years, and then also be subjected to conservation in mobilization parks and framed military units. First of all, under the UKN program, the latest Soviet machines were covered : IS-3, T-44, T-54. The latter, after the specified revision, was rightly recognized as the best post-war tank.

According to experts, the T-54 favorably differed from its peers with good mobility, powerful armament, and a rational configuration of the tower and hull. D-10T gun mounted on the tank, well-established itself, destroying the newest armored vehicles of the Wehrmacht, on the battlefields of the past war. Since 1944 this gun armed with an anti-tank self-propelled gun SU-100. Attempt to install this weapon on tanks T-34-100 and T-44-100 was not successful because of weak transmission. And then the T-54 was created. The tank's body was repeated (and shaped and sized) by the T-44, but the hemispherical tower was completely new. Already in 1946 the machine was adopted and began to enter the troops. August 29, 1949 in the USSR was a successful test of a nuclear explosive device, and almost immediately the military began to study how the technique behaves in the conditions of the use of atomic weapons. And here the T-54 began to have problems. The tank successfully defended the crew from the light radiation (flash) and weakened the action of the shock wave, however, the mechanism of the turret's rotation in this case went out of order, even if it was fixed "on-march".

To conduct combat operations in the conditions of the use of tactical nuclear weapons, significant changes were made to the design of the machine and a set of measures of anti-atomic protection was introduced. The new tank was given the designation T-55, it was adopted by the armies of the USSR and many countries of the world. This machine participated in military operations during the Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Iran-Iraq war, in Angola, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and many others.

Approximately at the same time as the T-55 began to enter the troops, the NATO countries adopted a powerful 105-mm L7A1 tank gun. This forced the Soviet designers to begin developing a new machine, known to us under the designation T-62A.

Device and construction

The design of the machine under the designation "Object 165" began in 1959 in the design bureau "Uralvagonzavod." The tank was equipped with an upgraded rifled cannon D-54TS with an automatic release of fired shells, which significantly reduced the gas content of the fighting compartment during firing. The gun was designated U-8TS. Due to the installation of the new gun, it was necessary to design a new case - it turned out to be longer and wider than that of the T-55. This was due to the increased breech of the tank gun and a longer shot (projectile), which, in turn, required expanding the shoulder of the tower. Such a radical alteration of the hull could have been avoided by introducing a separate loading, but this led to an increase in the time required to reload the gun, which was categorically unfavorable to the Main Armored Bureau. The engine and transmission remained the same. The new tank body required a change in the location of the support rollers to ensure the correct alignment of the machine. From the predecessor to the "Object 165" passed and the system of PAZ (anti-atomic protection). In parallel, work was underway to arm the experienced tank with a smooth-bore 115mm U-5TS gun. The machine with this weapon received the designation "Object-166". The use of a smoothbore gun greatly increased the pressure in the barrel channel, which significantly increased the armor penetration of the subcaliber projectile. In addition, the absence of the rotational component improved the characteristics of the cumulative jet of the corresponding ammunition.

"Army" service of the tank

Both the "Object", 165 and 166, were adopted in 1961 under the designations T-62A and T-62 respectively. Immediately began their serial production. However, if the T-62 was manufactured in 1975, the production of the T-62A was limited to 28 pieces. Refusal of the T-62A was due to a number of shortcomings of his gun. Less power and armor-piercing than the T-62, the absence of a subcaliber armor-piercing projectile for this gun, the presence of a muzzle brake that unmasked the tank and interfered with sighting - these are the reasons for this decision. All the tanks were sent to the Carpathian Military District, where they were used as training vehicles. Until now, not a single model of the T-62A has survived. Photos of these machines can be found only in archival sources and literature on the history of Soviet armored vehicles.

So the T-62A would remain a forgotten copy of the Soviet tank building, if not for the appearance on the Internet of a multiplayer game World of Tanks. In this project the machine was introduced as a Soviet medium tank of the tenth level. As in real life, he crowns the branch of ST development, one of the founders of which was the legendary T-34.
