SMA connector: description, purpose, classification of the device

The SMA connector was developed in 1960 for a semi-rigid cable type RG-402 (0.141 inch). These connectors are designed for a resistance of 50 ohms and a frequency of up to 18 GHz (individual precision versions are capable of operating at frequencies up to 26.5 GHz). The SMA connector has a 1 / 4-36 threaded connection , mechanical durability and compact dimensions. The maximum operating frequency for cable connectors depends on the type of wire.

Appointment

The high-frequency SMA connector has a very wide range of applications, the key parameters of which are the dimensions and the cut-off frequency. In phased array radars, measuring equipment, instrument landing systems, as well as in other devices that use phase matching, such connectors for coaxial semirigid cables, as well as special adapters (plug connectors), are a simple precision phase control means.

The SMA connector, manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the standard, is compatible with all connectors (regardless of the manufacturer) that meet this specification and have the same diameter. They are used in many microwave devices: microstrip and coaxial-wave transitions, attenuators, amplifiers, master generators, switches, mixers and filters.

Types of connectors

There are two types of SMA connectors: SMA ("socket" and "plug") and RP-SMA (also "socket" and "plug").

In wireless devices (Wi-Fi access point, WiMAX devices, adapter), there is a connector to which an antenna (SMA or N-Type connector) is connected. Since this connection consists of two parts, all connectors with a threaded mechanism are of two types, paired to each other: sockets and plugs. That is, the latter is screwed into the nest. The term "mother", "jack" or "female" is used to designate the outlet, and "daddy", "plug" or "male" for the plug.

There are various adapters and adapter cables between different types of connectors.

The second type of connectors are RP-SMA connectors (with reverse polarity or inverse connectors). In such connectors, the opposite is true: the plug has a socket contact, but the socket is forked. In the inverted connectors, the configuration in the central output is changed.

Classification of connectors

By the method of connection, the connectors in question are divided into devices with threaded and bayonet connection. By the method of installation, the connectors are screwed, soldered and crimped. According to the design, there are instrumental, cable, high frequency connectors mounted on the printed circuit board , as well as adapters.

Instrument devices are fixed to the body with a square flange or nut. The cable is installed by soldering or crimping. Connectors mounted on the board are attached by soldering vertically or horizontally to the surface. The cable connectors are fixed by crimping or soldering. Adapters are used to connect different types of connectors.

Conclusion

In computer technology, SMA connectors have found wide application in the organization of antennas for Wi-Fi devices. They provide very reliable contact, and also minimize the losses occurring at the junction points. The main characteristics of such connectors are durability and resistance to mechanical loads.
