Scheuerman-Mau disease

Diseases associated with the spine have always been considered unpleasant and dangerous. Surely everyone knows that they need to be treated in their youth, since in old age they can cause many troubles. There are a lot of such diseases, but almost all of them are curable to some extent.

The Sheyerman-Mau disease is associated with deformity of the spine, which occurs because the child grows too fast. Its symptoms can be found in about one percent of all people living in the world. As a rule, teenagers of both sexes suffer from it. Sometimes it is called Sherman-Mau disease.

Until now, no one can say the exact reasons why some are predisposed to it more than others. It is generally believed that the fault is nothing but heredity. Also, possible causes of its appearance include postponed trauma to the spine, as well as abnormal development of the dorsal muscles.

The healthy spine has three completely natural bends. The cervical area is always slightly inclined forward, the thoracic region slightly tilted forward, and the lumbar region slightly tilts back. The biggest burden falls on the lumbar region, but it is not excessive, since the rest of the departments also experience it. The disease of Sheyerman-Mau is due to the fact that the normal angles of inclination change, the load changes, and this already leads to deformation of the vertebrae.

The main symptoms of this disease

The disease of Sheyerman-Mau is most often found in adolescents, who are from ten to fifteen years old. This disease is very difficult to diagnose at an early stage, even with the help of an X-ray. Most often it is discovered by the parents of a teenager, noticing that there is something wrong with the bearing of their child. They take their child to the doctor, who already diagnoses.

The first symptoms, except for a barely noticeable curvature of posture, include pain in the area of scapula. Sometimes this pain appears only when the deformation has become more or less noticeable. It's very good if the parents suddenly remembered and took the teenager to the hospital, because the Sheyerman-Mau disease is progressing very quickly. Those who are ill are very often able to observe scoliosis (about thirty percent of all cases). In the presence of its deformation occurs somewhat differently than usual.

Symptoms in this case include hindered breathing, which is caused by the fact that the inclination of the spine does not allow the chest to expand with breathing. Because of this, problems with the heart are possible.

The diagnosis is usually made by the doctor after examining the patient, as well as after a survey (the presence of the disease in relatives, the injuries suffered). X-rays can be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

Sheyerman-Mau disease: treatment

The success of the entire treatment depends largely on when the disease was discovered. In itself, it can be surgical or conservative. Usually the method is determined after consultation with a doctor.

Of course, in most cases, you can limit yourself to conservative treatment. It includes massage, physiotherapy procedures, manual therapy, as well as physical therapy. Some patients are prescribed a special corset, which has to be worn for a very long time.

Surgical treatment is considered undesirable, and to resort to it try only in the most extreme cases. The whole point is that the risk with it is quite large.

Surgical treatment is resorted to when:

- there are problems with breathing and circulation;

- conservative treatment was useless;

- too large deviations from the norm.

One can not ignore the fact that many young men of conscription age are trying to avoid military service, emphasizing that they have Scheuerman-Mau disease.
