Roerich Museum in Moscow: opening hours, photo, how to get

The Roerich family left a large cultural and spiritual heritage, concentrated in the Moscow estate Lopukhins. International Roerich Museum in Moscow settled in the mansion since 1993. The core of the exhibition are the works of Nikolai and Elena Roerich, who created a unique philosophical concept of cognition of the world.

The next room is Petersburg. N. Roerich and E. Roerich were born in St. Petersburg, where they met and married. Children's photos of the future couple are presented in the shop windows. The early gymnasium paintings by N. Roerich decorate the walls, indicating the first stages of the development of the artist's talent. In St. Petersburg, a love for archeology, history, understanding of his mission arose in him and the spiritual power of the philosopher awoke. Here are exhibited archive photos of sons: Svyatoslav and Yuri. Also for review are books, personal belongings of the family.

Russian room

The exhibits presented here unite the pagan Russia and the Rus Christian into one. The Roerich Museum stores in its walls many artifacts from the first Russian expedition of the famous couple. Numerous photographs taken during the pilgrimage of the young Roerich family to the ancient cities of Russia testify to their love and interest in the history of the Motherland. Conducted archaeological research strengthened Nicholas Roerich in honoring the land and the past of his country.

Traveling across Holy Russia, the artist and thinker found confirmation of his thought about the unity of civilizations of Russia and the East. From his trips he brought rarities found in the earth, confirming the theory of unity, paintings, sketches, diaries, filled with admiration of the people and the ancient history of their native land. Living Ethics Hall

Here are the works of N. Roerich serving as illustrations to the teachings of Agni Yoga, which his wife, E. Roerich, wrote in the thirties of the twentieth century. You can also see the first editions of the work "Agni Yoga", portraits of Elena Roerich, a conceptual exhibition of busts of outstanding thinkers of mankind. Hall of the Central Asian Expedition

On the map presented in the hall, you can trace the route of the legendary expedition of the Roerichs to the East. During the trip N. Roerich was convinced of the existence of a single center, a source of knowledge, which initiated the cultural community of Russia, India, and Tibet. The documents in the windows of the hall tell about the stages of the expedition, the diary entries of the participants' reflections. Unique frames of photo chronicles tell about the difficulties of the path, achievements, impressions. The paintings painted by Nicholas Roerich in this period are distinguished by a special spirituality, insights, piercing clarity of colors. Some of the paintings are placed in the walls of the hall.

Kulu Hall

Here you can transfer to the Kulu valley, where Nikolai Roerich and his family lived for twenty years. In the valley, he founded the unique Institute of Himalayan Studies, named "Urusvati". Nicholas Roerich was the leading specialist of the Institute, devoting his time to studying the human psychic energy, the possibilities of spiritual development, the power of thought. Investigations were devoted to the winter months, archaeological expeditions were organized in the summer.

Evidence of hard work, scientific achievements are kept in the Kullu Hall. Luminaries of world science, such as Einstein, Vavilov, were drawn to research work. With stages of the development of the institute, itineraries of expeditions, finds the halls of the halls. The Roerich Museum provides extensive materials on the Indian period of life of thinkers.

Social and cultural activities

Hall of the Banner of Peace

Nicholas Roerich was the conductor and protector of the cultural heritage of Russia. He spoke against the destruction of historical monuments and preached the unity of earthly civilization. Before the Second World War, in 1931, Nikolai Grigorievich created the famous Roerich Pact, which calls for the preservation of cultural heritage and became the basis for the creation of the Culture League, which established the Day of Culture. Documents of that time are placed on the stands of the hall, they are proudly kept by the Roerich Museum. Photos, diary entries, transcripts of meetings testify to the active activity in this direction.

The continuers of the Roerichs

The two remaining halls are dedicated to the life and work of Yuri Roerich, the eldest son, and Svyatoslav Roerich, the youngest son who became the founder of the Roerich Public Center in Moscow.

Yuri Roerich is an Orientalist, linguist, artist, archeologist. He devoted his life to studying the finds and legacies of Nicholas Roerich, he painted paintings.

Svyatoslav Roerich is an artist, public figure. His paintings are filled with a deep sacral meaning, which is not immediately revealed. His worship of beauty is reflected in every brush stroke, in every gesture of his heroes.
