Pulse relays for lighting control: description and operation principle

The relay is a device for switching the electrical circuit when the input influences change. The classical variant is an electromechanical device, which opens or closes contacts when passing through the winding of an electric current. Pulse relays for lighting control also have two states: on and off. But their distinctive feature is the switching of the state by one pulse. After pressing the button of the switch operating on the principle of an electric bell button, a short voltage pulse is passed through the coil winding or control circuit to switch the power contacts. If the voltage remains on the normal relay after switching on, then it is removed at the pulse relay (bistable). But at the same time switching of contacts that switch the load is still happening.

Advantages of impulse relays

  1. Energy is not wasted to maintain the "on" state. Energy is spent only on switching.
  2. Quiet operation.
  3. Possibility to connect any number of pass-through switches.
  4. Savings of the wiring, because for operational control requires a smaller cross-section of cores. In addition, two conductors are sufficient for each pass-through switch .
  5. Many options for use in everyday life and electronic circuits.

Types of relays

These electronic devices are made of several types:

  1. Electromagnetic. The control is made by switching contacts by an electromagnet. When an electric pulse passes through its winding, the switching mechanism is activated under the action of the generated magnetic field.
  2. Electronic. Depend on the network. The leading manufacturers in terms of quality are approaching electromagnetic ones.

The use of impulse relays

The ability to control the switching of light is used in staircase switches. Built-in timer allows you to turn off the light in the entrance of the house after a set period of time. The pulse relay is installed in the luminaire itself, in the junction box or in the control panel. It can also be part of the BIS-403 staircase.

Also, bistable relays are used to turn the lighting on and off from different locations, simplifying the electrical wiring layout as compared to the through switches.

Connecting a pulse relay for lighting control

The device contains 4 outputs:

  • Feeding phase;
  • Zero wire;
  • Output to buttons;
  • Phase output to light bulbs.

The neutral is connected to light sources separately.

The buttons connect the phase to the lamps. Their number can be no more than 10, otherwise false positives will appear. Usually their number does not exceed 2-4. You can set more than 10 if the control wires are placed separately from the power wires and connect an additional capacitor.

Device and application

Pulse relays for lighting control are very easy to use. Despite the availability of electronics, the device is quite reliable in operation. It includes a sensor unit and an electric coil. Power is supplied from the mains. The circuit contains control and load circuits. The device operates silently and remembers the previous settings.

Pulse relay RIO-1

Pulse relay control lighting RIO-1 contains the following contacts:

  • Y - alternating switching on and switching off of the power circuit by successive pressing;
  • Y1 - inclusion;
  • Y2 - disconnection;
  • N is zero;
  • 11-14 - normally open contacts.

There are 2 On / Off buttons for switching lighting from different places, but you can install them again by connecting them in parallel. The lighting circuits are rated at 10 A. To protect them, a circuit breaker is installed. The power contacts of the RIO-1 relay can withstand a current of 16 amperes. If more power is required, the lighting control via the pulse relay is made via a contactor.

If the light is off, then pressing any button switches the signal to the input Y. This closes the power contact 11-14, which supplies voltage to the lamps.

When the switch of any switch is pressed again, the phase is fed back to the input Y, but the power contact 11-14, which switches off the lighting, already opens. The circuit is much simpler than with the use of pass-through switches and is not at all complicated by the parallel connection of new ones.

To facilitate troubleshooting in the event of a short circuit, it is advisable to install a separate circuit breaker on the 6A power control circuit. Then it immediately becomes clear which circuit is faulty, according to the protection that has worked in it. At the same time, a smaller cross-sectional wire (0.75 mm 2 ) is required for the control circuit.

Switching relay ABB

If you need to install a pulse relay to control the lighting, abb will do just fine.

Its advantages are as follows:

  1. Availability of additional pins for centralized control. Through them, you can forcibly turn the lights on or off, regardless of what state it is in. Then you can connect all the relays through them and control them simultaneously, for example, turn off all the lights, leaving the house.
  2. Group module E250 GM for selective switching-off of illumination on floors or at once in all house.
  3. Stability to interference of electromechanical ABB.
  4. The presence of control relay contacts manually, using the lever on the device. This is convenient when the automation fails.
  5. The ability to work on DC or AC provides great advantages for a variety of applications.

Pulse relays for controlling lighting ABB also have disadvantages:

  • The possibility of installation only in the shield on DIN-rails;
  • high price.

In spite of the price, many people buy impulse relays ABB due to high reliability and resistance to interference.

Locking relays legrand

Analogues of ABB products are pulse relays for lighting control Legrand. Their advantages are as follows:

  • A variety of useful functions that can be changed with the help of additional accessories (alarm contact, additional control device, compensator, etc.);
  • Economy and reliability;
  • Convenience of connections;
  • Independent connection of the power and control circuits via separate terminals.

Legrand models also have high prices, but they justify themselves with proper use.

Conclusion

Pulse relays for lighting control allow creating additional comfort in an apartment or a house. If used correctly, they are economical and reliable. In addition, the models of leading manufacturers introduce new functions in the management of light, without which it is indispensable.
