Pragmaticity is the lack of morality?

According to Dunham's definition, pragmatism is the way to determine optimality. In translation from the Greek language the word "pragma" is translated as "practice, action". In the philosophy of morality the direction of pragmatism was widespread from the beginning to the end of the 50s of the XX century. The basis of this teaching laid the philosopher William James, who formulated two basic principles of pragmatism:

1. Goodness is what corresponds to a collective need.

2. Each moral situation is unique, and therefore each time it is necessary to look for a completely new solution.

Later, the philosopher-pragmatist Dewey and the ethic Tufts unfolded these positions into a whole theory. The meaning of the word "pragmatic" defines this concept as the ability to plan and act without departing from the plan. Ability to choose the main thing and cut off unnecessary, so as not to exchange their basic needs for the fuss of life.

The theory of pragmatism

Pragmaticity is the exclusion of two extremes in ethics: absolutism and moral dogmatism. Moral values are considered in this case as something universal and not dependent on a changing life situation. If you analyze the theory of pragmatism, it is clear that it is not peculiar for it to uphold the rights of reason and morality.

Pragmaticity is a denial of the importance of generally accepted moral principles. Pragmatists argue that moral problems must be solved by the person himself, taking into account the specific situation in which he is. Consequently, pragmatists deny the probability of a theoretical examination of life's problems. Also, in their opinion, it is impossible to turn ethical standards into "practical science".

The essence of pragmatism

Pragmaticity is the desire to ensure that the efforts invested and the time spent pay off the result obtained. A short way should not exhaust the traveler, otherwise he is not quite right. Public morality sharply criticizes pragmatism. The meaning of this word is condemned by the society, which is reflected in such well-known phrases as "it is not harmful to dream" or "you want a lot, you will not get much." But pragmatism is a very correct and useful feature for the realization of plans and goals. Awareness of one's own goal will allow you to choose and decide whether you really want it.

Many people think that pragmatism is the ability to extract personal benefits and benefits from everything that happens around. But in reality - this is one way to determine life goals, as well as their embodiment. It is assumed that to achieve the goals you can use all available means, even if they go beyond the generally accepted rules of morality and ethics.

This pragmatism approach to the problem of goals and means, in fact, means justifying the morality of any action, since someone is already engaged in their implementation. The main task of the mind in morality comes down to the solution of a purely practical task: to find the most effective way to solve any goal. In some cases, pragmatism justifies unscrupulousness, amoralism and a policy of achieving the desired goals in any way.
