Practical tips on how to find out the area of a room
Professionals - it is, of course, simpler. They have an eye and a tool, and there is a tool. But those who do not have a construction education, but because of the circumstances decided to independently repair themselves, sometimes you have to break your head over the simplest, seemingly, tasks. Here, for example, such a question: how to find out the area of the room? And now the philistine nervously draws lines on paper or paces the room back and forth, pulling a meter tape measure ... Eh, it was necessary to listen carefully to the teacher of geometry!
But there is no time for lyrics - repair itself will not become. Therefore, we will quickly consider all the nuances, but at the same time we will talk about the cases when in general this very area of the room is so necessary.
Equipment
Before proceeding with the removal of the measurements, we will arm ourselves with the following simple devices:
- Tape measure or centimeter tape ;
- Pencil or chalk;
- Notebook with pen;
- calculator.
Take care that everything is at hand. Do not rely on memory and the phenomenal abilities of an oral account - just write down the numbers and count on the calculator. The values obtained will most likely not be circular, working with them in the mind will not be easy.
Tip from the tutorial
The square formula is one of the few knowledge gained in the school that most people remember all their lives. You just need to multiply the length and width - nothing complicated.
Therefore, before you know the area of the room, just measure the length of the walls. The resulting values are multiplied, and here it is the result!
"But not all rooms are in the form of a rectangle and a square", - the inquisitive reader will certainly notice ... That's right, so let's try to turn the focus and in the premises of an unusual layout.
A circle
Modern architecture sometimes surprises with non-standard solutions, so do not think that the round can only be a throne room in the castle of the pretentious king or the hall in the hotel. Faced with this may, for example, the owner of housing in a fashionable new building or the person who bought an apartment after re-planning. Again, we remember the course of geometry and write the formula in the notebook: S = πR².
In practice, it is easier to measure the diameter than to find the radius, because for the latter it is necessary to know exactly where the center is. And to find the diameter, simply fix the edge of the measuring tape near one wall, move to the opposite and by trial and error, find the point as far from the beginning of the tape.
Divide the resulting value in half, square it and multiply it by 3.14. This is the area of the round room.
How to find out the area of an irregularly shaped room
Let's analyze the example for greater visibility. Let's say that we have a small apartment, a "hotel", in which we need to know the area of the living room:
We do the following:
- We measure wall 1 and wall 2, write down the values obtained;
- Multiply x: 7 x 3.5 = 24.5 (m 2 );
- We measure walls number 3 and 4;
- Multiply: 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 (m 2 );
- Subtract from the obtained first value the "extra area": 24.5 - 3.75 = 20.75 (m 2 ).
As we see, again nothing difficult!
Scope of application
And why do we even try to understand how to find out the area of a room in square meters? Let's define, for calculation of what materials it is useful. Of course, we are talking about materials for floor and ceiling. So, this value is needed when applied:
- Plaster mixture;
- Primer, putty;
- paint;
- liquid wallpaper;
- Textured plaster;
- Varnish;
- Substrate under the laminate, parquet;
- Waterproofing roll materials;
- Styrofoam.
Counting the consumption of material, we often (but not always!) Proceed from the area.
When it does not come in handy
Choosing some types of decoration, you can not even think about how to find out the area of the room. Why? Yes, because we will not make a joint of wallpaper in the middle of the ceiling or collect a mosaic of linoleum. Relying on the square, it's easy to make mistakes when buying, so for roll-up finishing materials we need linear wall sizes - we will count by the number of whole strips. Such materials include:
- wallpaper;
- Carpet;
- linoleum;
- Suspended ceiling type "Armstrong";
- Tension ceiling.
Are no exception flooring (laminate, parquet). This value is in most cases informative for small tiles, but it is better to recalculate large, based on the length and width of the room.
Area of walls
By the same principle that we used to calculate the area of the room of irregular shape (the hotel), you can easily calculate the area of the walls. Knowing the length and width of the room, calculate its perimeter, multiply by the height. We obtain the total surface area, from which we then subtract the area of windows and doors.
But a little trick about how to find out the area of the walls of the room, pasted with typical wallpaper. If you can see the joints between the stripes, count the number. Divide by 2 and get the perimeter in meters. The fact is that the width of the wallpaper roll is just over 50 cm. Therefore, you do not have to walk along the walls with a tape measure, before you find out the perimeter of the room.
Knowing the area and linear dimensions of the room, it is easy to calculate the number of materials needed for repair, even without the help of professionals.
