Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius, an island state located in the Indian Ocean. About 200,000 people live in this place, it is also the main port of the country. It is one of the busiest commercial ports in Africa, but also a popular stop for the jetty of international cruise liners. The city has a rich history, its harbor has been used by merchants since the 1630s. In the eighteenth century, it became a stumbling block between the French and the British, who considered it to be the most important key to the Indian Ocean. The French took into account the favorable strategic position of the place, making it the administrative center in 1735. The city was named after the French king Louis (Louis) XV.
But, of course, he is worthy of a visit at least in order to have an idea of the Mauritian culture. The heart and soul of Port Louis is its colorful bazaars. Next to the old buildings is a grand construction, coastal areas are increasingly at the mercy of modern skyscrapers. The past and the present of the country live in this city!
The streets in the city are usually very close, especially near the markets. The central market should definitely visit (by the way, its hall is of historical value). Here you can find many interesting and exotic products: textiles, spices, fragrant oils, herbal teas, fruits, vegetables, souvenirs and gifts at inexpensive prices. In addition, the market sells sculptures made of wood, masks, beautiful colored baskets, fine jewelry, copies of handicrafts, which Mauritius is famous for. Where this can all be found, with the exception of the market, any resident of the capital will tell. Mauritians are very friendly and friendly people. They always patiently explain where and how to go, where to taste the national dishes that are offered in the cafes and restaurants of the capital.
Fort Adelaide is located on a hill and has panoramic views of the city and harbor. It was built in a strategically advantageous place by the British, who tried in this way to protect themselves from the French settlers in Port Louis.
Mauritius became British after a decisive victory over the French in 1810. Since that time, he remained under British dominion until he gained independence in 1968.
