"Oxytocin": instructions, indications, contraindications

The drug "Oxytocin" is used for obstetric care. It is the peptide hormone (obtained artificially) of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Depending on the manufacturer, he may have the following trade names: Partokon, Oxystin, Pituapartin, Utedrin, Ipofoamin, Shintoicin, Orastin, Uterakon, Otsitotsin.

The active substance oxytocin, the instruction draws the attention of consumers to this, raises the tone of the uterus, enhances the contractile ability of the myometrium - the muscular layer of the uterus.

This means that the drug is administered to stimulate (accelerate) the birth activity, accelerate the reduction (involution) of the uterus after childbirth. It is also shown during Caesarean section.

Among women there are rumors that the drug "Oxytocin" with bleeding is an indispensable and safe remedy. In fact, the medicine helps with so-called atonic bleeding, which is associated with a loss of the tone of the uterus. But this in no way is an indication for self-treatment: the cause of uterine bleeding may be the most unlike phenomena. In each case, only the doctor determines how and how to stop bleeding. Self-prescribed drugs, including "Oxytocin", the instruction emphasizes this especially, can lead to a fatal outcome.

What else is the medicine "Oxytocin" capable of? Its use accelerates the reduction of myoepithelial cells. These are special secretory cells that enter the alveolar surrounding of the mammary glands. Their increased reduction contributes to the formation and promotion of milk from a nursing woman to large milk ducts.

The drug "Oxytocin", the instruction informs and about it, reduces urination, because it has not very pronounced vasopressin-like antidiuretic effect. This means that it promotes the inverse absorption of water by the kidneys, thereby reducing the separation of urine.

In maternity hospitals, the drug is prescribed for women who do not have timely postpartum departments because of loss of contractility by the uterus.

Are there any contraindications to the popular drug "Oxytocin"? The instruction prints this information in a selected font. It is contraindicated for women with a very narrow pelvis and the so-called "baby uterus". It can not be administered if the fetus is in the wrong position , even if the fetus is large and does not fit the size of the uterus. If for some reason the uterus is threatened with rupture, the drug is also contraindicated.

Like all other medicines, "Oxytocin" can cause an incorrect reaction or side effects. Because they can manifest themselves instantly, only doctors can administer the drug. Such side effects include anaphylactic shock of the woman in childbirth, a sharp increase in the tone of the uterus, persistent contractions of the uterus, which can lead to its rupture. In addition to these phenomena there may occur a short-term, but sharp and severe drop in pressure, a tachycardia appears. In most women, the administration of this medication causes vomiting, nausea.

Many of these conditions threaten the fetus, which can begin asphyxia or squeeze in the womb, leading to his death.

That's why doctors use the drug "Oxytocin" under strict control and when the benefit from it exceeds the possible harm.

Enter the drug intravenously or intramuscularly. Begin intramuscularly to not cause anaphylactic shock. Only after this, if immediate results are required, the drug is administered intravenously. This should be done slowly, because the fluid injection of the drug dramatically reduces pressure and causes tachycardia.

Usually, at delivery, 1-3 IU are administered. On the recommendation of a gynecologist, a subcutaneous injection of 5-10Me can be prescribed. At Caesarean section the medicine "Oxytocin" is introduced into the musculature of the uterus according to 5ME. Naturally, in each case, the doctor selects an individual dose.
