National currency of Turkey: what every tourist should know

The national currency of one of the most popular tourist destinations is the Turkish lira. This currency of Turkey is mainly used by local residents. Foreign guests prefer to settle in dollars, less often euros or rubles. At the same time, they do not even realize that paying for local currency purchases is sometimes cheaper.

History

To date, a new Turkish lira is in circulation in the Republic of Turkey . This currency of Turkey was issued in early 2005. The reason for such changes is high inflation. For example, in 1966 one dollar could be paid 9 lire, and in 2004 one American dollar was given a fortune - more than one million lire. Of course, it was not easy to settle for such money, but they were all "millionaires". After the new currency came into use, everything became much easier. One new lyre became equivalent to one million old lira. Earlier the old abbreviation was designated - TL (that is, the Turkish lira), now the new one is denoted YTL (the new Turkish lira).

Description

In circulation, both banknotes and coins are used. On each of them you can see the portrait of the first and beloved president of the Turkish Republic - Mustafa Ataturk. Banknotes are represented by denominations from 5 to 200 lire. It is important to remember that one Turkish lira is equivalent to 100 kurushas. Coins are used in nominal value from 1 to 50 kurushas, the largest coin is equal to one lira.

What currency to take to Turkey

As already mentioned, many foreign guests take with them mostly dollars. Of course, after all, this currency is widely used and accepted everywhere. Euro is better not to take, you will pay at a completely unprofitable exchange rate. Very strange, but in Turkey, the euro is equated to the dollar. But a single European currency may be needed at airports, namely in duty-free shops. The national currency of Turkey will be relevant in small shops and markets. They also take dollars and euros, but the rate is usually not in favor of the buyer.

Where to exchange money
