How is the car towed with automatic transmission?

Every year the automatic transmission becomes more and more popular among domestic motorists. In urban conditions (in traffic jams and congestion), the transmission "automatic" is a real savior for the driver. But on the roads, anything can happen, and when driving out of town a car with automatic transmission may not reach its destination. The breakdown is so serious that it can only be handled by a professional service station. And what if the nearest tow truck is 100 km from the car? Let's figure it out.

Rules for towing a car in case of serious damage

If towing is not possible on the tow truck, and the car refuses to start, the only way out of the situation is a flexible or rigid coupling. In both cases, to make a move, you need to turn on your engine. Before riding on the coupler, stick the gearshift lever to the "N" position and only then start towing. Remember that the car in this case can be overheated, so to protect the engine, add a couple of liters of transmission oil.

How is the car towed with automatic transmission if it got into an accident?

It often happens that with a slight frontal impact, the engine or its components simply fail. With a pierced radiator, it is unlikely to make an independent movement. And then comes to the rescue a proven method for years - towing a car with automatic transmission with a hitch. This method is similar to the first case, but here we should take into account several nuances. Towing a car with automatic transmission, which got into an accident, is made with strict observance of the speed limit. With a flexible and rigid coupling, the speed of the machine should not exceed the mark of 50 kilometers per hour. In addition, in order not to overheat the engine, make small pauses every 55-60 kilometers of the way. After this run, you must stop the car and wait for the transmission to cool down. The exception is a 4-speed automatic box (with it you can move up to 70 kilometers). Towing a car with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is always done with the tow bar inserted. It is best, of course, to transport SUVs on special equipment, picking up the cable to a tractor or bulldozer. But if this is not possible, go to the first rule.

What should I do if the car is equipped with a robotic gearbox? How is the car towed?

The price of such transmissions is an order of magnitude higher than usual, and here overpayment is not only for comfort or reliability. The fact is that a car with a robotic box can be towed not 55, not 60, and not even 70, but as much as 100 km without stopping. At a rigid coupling always observe a high-speed mode in 50 kilometers per hour. When flexible, additional care should be taken also for the length of the cable. It should be 3- or 6-meter (a small error is allowed in the range between the specified values). If the length of the cable is too large, it will make the car even more dangerous, since the car in this case becomes less manoeuvrable. Too short a cable threatens to collide. Therefore, with a flexible coupling always observe the length of the cable and do not allow high deviations.
