Historical reference

Just over thirty years ago, on the night of April 26, one of the biggest accidents in the history of the use of nuclear energy happened. Due to the uncontrolled increase in the capacity of the fourth, which was put into operation less than three years ago, an explosion occurred after midnight. Despite the timely measures taken to reduce the amount of radiation (it is worth noting that this helped for a short time), the amount of radioactive substances released into the air only increased, and it was possible to speak about their reduction only two weeks after the accident itself. The situation was also complicated by the fact that the ejected substances were carried by air over huge distances.

The consequences of environmental pollution by radiation were stretched in time. Immediately after the accident, 31 people were killed, 600 thousand people involved in the liquidation of the accident received high doses of radiation, 404 thousand people were forced to leave their belongings, houses, apartments and move as far as possible from the dangerous terrain. The lands that were used in agriculture were affected, many hectares became unsuitable for growing useful crops on them.

At the same time, after the construction of the "sarcophagus" for the fourth unit of the station, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant began gradually to resume its work six months after the accident. But in ten years the first unit was decommissioned. In 2000, the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl finally ceased to function.

April 26 is the day of memory of those killed in radiation accidents and catastrophes. These days people around the world come to monuments and light hundreds of candles.
