Monsieur Cannibal - directed by Ruggiero Deodato

Ruggero Deodato is the world-famous Italian film director, television producer and screenwriter. The most famous project of Deodato is the horror film "Hell of Cannibals", deservedly considered to be one of the most violent films in the history of the world film industry, shot in a pseudo-documentary style.

The beginning of a creative career

Ruggero Deodato, whose films are still the subject of fierce debate between cinematographers and moralists, was born in Italy in Potenza. After graduation, he migrated to Rome, where the fateful meeting of young Ruggiero and Lorenzo - the son of the famous film director Roberto Rossellini took place.

Maestro began his career as an assistant director of one of the leading European founders of neo-realism. According to Deodato, cooperation with Roberto had a huge impact on his work. The stage manager was able to adopt a realistic vision of the world of his mentor. In the period from 1958 to 1967, Ruggiero Deodato collaborated with many legendary directors: amateur atmospheric horror Joseph Lawsey, the creator of police thrillers Riccardo Fred and professional in the fantasy genre Antonio Margeriti.

Producer and director

Since the early 70's, Ruggero is acting as a producer, is engaged in the production of telecasts and multi-series television films. Debut Deodato as a director to some extent can be considered a typical Italian peplum "Ursus, the horror of Kyrgyzstan" (1964). This film is pure fiction, in which geographical names are quite amusing and do not correspond to reality. The picture was started by Antonio Margeriti, but after he left, he completed the filming process of Ruggero. Despite the pronounced, obvious genre, the film was made quite qualitatively, and it's very interesting to watch it, because the main role in the film is played by a cult figure - Reg Park.

Formation of the director

Ruggero Deodato, the filmography of which has about 25 films, began the creative path from the creation of adventure films and musical comedies, like many of his colleagues. In the period from 1964 to 1977, the director directed the adventure film "Gungala, the Naked Panther", the comedy musical "Women and Bersaliers", the western "In the Name of the Father", the comedy "Genre" and the dramatic thriller "The Wave of Desire". After the release of the rental of these films, the director resolutely switched to creativity in the genres of jallo and horror.

According to the director's memoirs, he quickly realized that in light genres it is rather difficult to create his own brand. According to Deodato, in comedies during the filming process, the paramount role remains unchanged for the actors-comedians who alone "rule the ball." The director plays a secondary role. Ruggero Deodato wished that the responsibility lay primarily on him, and afterwards on the invited masters of the stage.

Everyone knows that Italy is home to the great film directors Visconti, Antonioni and Fellini, but it is also famous for the brilliant horrormakers: Dario Argento, Lamberto and Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci. Each of these has its place in the world cinema. Ruggero Deodato is positioned by the world cinema community as Monsieur Cannibal. The director received this nickname from the French after the release in 1977 of his first project "Hell of cannibals 3" and "Hell of cannibals" (1979).

A supporter of realistic cinema

The director himself claims that he has no connection with the aforementioned directors, he is from a "different test." Since the horrormakers created real horror films, and Ruggiero Deodato considers himself a supporter of great realism in the cinema. Indeed, his projects in the horror genre are rather sophisticated and shocking.

Known in the Russian Federation as "Hell of cannibals 3" - the film is truly merciless, filmed gloomily and extremely realistically. According to the story, a self-confident inhabitant of a megalopolis falls into a plane crash over one of the small islets of New Guinea, the plane makes an emergency landing. The four survivors on the first night are the victims of bloodthirsty aboriginal cannibals. The protagonist tries to escape from the captivity of the tribe of cannibals, but his independent existence in the jungle turns an adequate inhabitant into a real killer. Ruggero Deodato extremely carefully brings the beholder to the conclusion, uttered by one of the secondary characters of the film: "Everyone becomes a link in the chain of survival".

The most banned in the world

Horror "Hell of cannibals" (1979) glorified the director everywhere. His rental was banned in more than 60 states, which automatically elevated the picture to the status of the most banned film in the world. The script for the film was written by Gianfranco Clerici. Ruggiero filmed his project in a pseudo-documentary manner. The film tells a tragic story that happened to a small crew in the wilds of the Amazon. A special charm is attached to the picture of the unadorned "truthfulness" of the plot and the characteristic "documentary" of Deodato. Cinema is recognized as one of the first examples of genre works of the "found film" genre.

After the director created a lot of films of the genre horror ("House on the edge of the park," "Atlantis Predators," "Counting the body," "The Phantom of Death," etc.), but none of the subsequent works shocked cinema publicism as "cannibalism saga".

Work on TV

Since the 90s, Ruggero Deodato, whose photo no longer appeared on the covers of well-known prints, continued to work on television, and shot television series. According to the director, there are clearly different levels between television and cinema - there is no special drama on TV. Therefore, Ruggero, agreeing to shoot a television movie, requires that it involved only professional actors. In the 90s, a television movie "Ocean", directed by Deodato, was broadcast and enjoyed popularity on one of the TV channels of the Russian Federation. It featured gifted, Oscar-winning actors: M. Adorf, E. Borgnine, I. Papas, M. Berenson, M. Bolssam. The shooting lasted about three months in the Canary Islands. The series differs from other excellent original story, brilliant cast and wonderful musical accompaniment.
