Levomycitin eye drops. Indications and instructions for use

Levomycitin eye drops are a topical drug with a wide range of effects. This drug is effective in combating the majority of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, large viruses, as well as rickettsia and spirochetes. Let's find out the composition of the drops, how they should be used, at what age they are prescribed to children and from what eye diseases they will relieve.

The composition of the drops "Levomycetin"

Levomitsitinovye eye drops are available in sterile bottles of 5 and 10 ml. The percentage of active ingredient to the total volume of the drug is 0.25%. This means that 1 ml of the prepared solution contains 25 mg of chloramphenicol. As auxiliary substances are purified water and boric acid. Drops of "Levomycetin" refer to antibiotics that have a bacteriostatic effect. They are effective in controlling microorganisms that are resistant to the effects of penicillin, tetracycline antibiotics and sulfonamides. Although the drug is characterized as a topical application, drops can partially penetrate the blood supply system, which does not harm the body.

How to apply the drug and what diseases it treats

Levomycitin eye drops are prescribed for treatment:

  • Conjunctivitis;
  • Keratitis;
  • Blepharitis;
  • Keratoconjunctivitis.

These diseases are inflammatory processes of bacterial origin, which are localized in the cornea or conjunctiva. The mechanism of combating bacteria is the violation of the synthesis of proteins of microorganisms. The agent is instilled in each eye for 1-2 drops at the beginning of the disease up to 5 times a day, and when the improvement is noticeable, it is enough 3 times. The duration of application is determined by the attending physician, thus it is not recommended to use the "Levomycetin" drop for longer than 14 days. Instruction to children does not focus on the age at which the drug can be used, but ophthalmologists are already fearlessly assigned to babies over the age of the year.

Contraindications and side effects

Levomitsitinovye eye drops are contraindicated for use by people:

  • With violation of hematopoiesis;
  • With hepatic and renal insufficiency;
  • With hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

It is not recommended to use this product for pregnant and lactating women. Only a doctor can prescribe these drops, assessing the possible risk to the child and benefit to the mother. Control of the doctor is required when using the drug for children from birth to 2 years, as well as patients with skin diseases (eczema or psoriasis).

In most cases, the use of the drug does not cause side effects, and in rare cases, redness, burning and itching in the eyes are possible. When used for longer than 3 weeks, there may be abnormalities in the circulatory system (leukopenia, thrombopenia, aplastic anemia) and repeated development of the fungus. In this case, you need to cancel the drug and prescribe another treatment, depending on the symptoms. People wearing contact lenses need to be removed before instillation and wear after 40 minutes. Such a medicine is quite cheap, for drops of "Levomycetin" the price varies from 10 to 30 rubles per 10 ml bottle.
