Learning the rules: unstressed vowel at the root of the word

Unfortunately, in recent years there has been a tendency to reduce literacy among schoolchildren. The reasons for this can be completely different. But, it should be noted that this is partly the fault of the teachers, since often the simplest rules are explained not so easily as it should be.

Almost the most common mistake, not only in the primary, but also in the secondary school, is an incorrectly written unstressed vowel at the root of the word. It causes difficulties mostly from the fact that babies can not yet understand that we do not always write as we say, but older children are mistaken already out of habit.

Explaining to the students the rules of writing an unstressed vowel at the root of the word, it is worth paying attention to a few points.

First, for this, children must clearly know parts of the word and be able to allocate them. It's not so easy to make a younger schoolboy, as it seems to an adult. The main exercise for this is the selection of single root words. However, it is worth remembering that some words similar in sound, for example, the noun "mushrooms" and the verb "rowing", have nothing in common with each other. To do this, it is necessary to remember that words that have one root are also similar in meaning, regardless of which part of the speech they belong to. This skill is necessary to check spelling in the future.

Secondly, it is important to know that an unstressed vowel at the root of a word can not always be verified with the help of single-root words. Such a spelling is called an unverifiable vowel and, more often than not, words with it have to be learned by heart. In this case, the verified unstressed vowel at the root, in most cases, should not cause difficulties. More often than not, you can simply change the form of the word, so that the vowel is stressed and clearly audible.

For elementary school, this knowledge is quite sufficient, however, in secondary school, students have to face a new orthogram that will tell you that there is an alternating unstressed vowel at the root. In these cases, writing depends on several factors. For some cases (for example, lag-lodges, rastros), this is a consonant or a combination of consonants going after vowels. In other roots (case) look at the suffix, if it is represented by the prefix -a, it is written -a- (touch), if any other, the root will touch (touch). Another important point in the study of alternating vowels in the root will be the stress. This applies to the roots of har-, gor-; Zar-, zor-; Clan, clone, and others. In an unstressed position, O (for example, bow) is written in them, in the shock A (bow), or in some words can O (bow).

One of the basic rules for the formation of the desired skill: its constant repetition. Therefore, even after this topic has been studied (and it takes not too many hours to do), it is worthwhile to spend as often as possible a few minutes of the lesson for the spelling dictation, which includes words containing an unstressed vowel at the root.

Explaining the rules, it is important to draw at such a time as the words-exceptions. They, usually, learn by heart, because they are not so many. Taking into account the peculiarities of the random memory of junior schoolchildren, it is recommended to use "memorization", special rhymes easily remembered, which contain the necessary words. This will make it easier and quicker to remember the exceptions in which the unstressed vowel at the root of the word is written contrary to the basic rule.

Thus, an unstressed vowel at the root of a word is one of the simplest rules, with the most common in practice, this is because this orthogram can occur in any independent part of speech. The skill of its correct writing should be formed in an elementary school and stay for the rest of your life. Explaining the rules and spelling, do not forget about the age characteristics of schoolchildren.
