Kozlyatyevo village, Preobrazhenskaya church: description, photo. The Transfiguration Church in Suzdal

The Transfiguration Church was erected in the village of Kozlyatyevo, Kolchuginsky District (Vladimir Region). This is a real masterpiece of Old Russian architecture: the structure is made entirely of wood. Today it is in Suzdal, on the territory of the famous Museum of Wooden Architecture.

A bit of history

The Transfiguration Church (Kozlyatyevo village) has an interesting history. At the time of the appearance of Christianity in Rus on the bank of the Kamenka River, near Suzdal, a monastery was built. It was founded by monks from the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. On the territory was erected a church consecrated in the name of Dimitry of Thessalonica. And the monastery was called Dimitrievo-Pechersky.

The surviving chronicles mention it in 1096. Tatar-Mongol hordes in 1238 burned the monastery. But already in the XVI century it was revived. In 1551, Makari (Moscow Metropolitan) granted the monastery village Mzhary, which was located nearby.

In 1690 Suzdal Metropolitan Hilarion built a new wooden church in place of the old and dilapidated. In 1764, Catherine II closed the monastery, and the Dimitriev church became a parish. It lasted until 1773, after which it was disassembled due to the dilapidation.

Its place was occupied by a stone church with a bell tower, which was in this place until 1930, and then it was also dismantled. Now there is a magnificent structure: a wooden church (as under Illarion). She was transferred to Suzdal from Kozlyatyevo. The Transfiguration Church was restored and restored by the famous Soviet architect V.M. Anisimov.

The construction began to disassemble and transport to Suzdal in the winter of 1965. Until 1969, it was restored and restored on the site of the disassembled in 1930 stone Dimitrievskaya church.

The second restoration was carried out in 1988, it included work on chemical protection. From 2004 to 2005, the church survived the third restoration, aimed at strengthening the load-bearing structures, installing a wooden support frame inside. This work was carried out by JSC Resme (Moscow).

In July 2011, a fire occurred due to lightning. The central head of the upper octagon and partly the roof were lost. In December 2011 the Transfiguration Church (Kozlyatyevo) was completely restored and restored after a fire.

It is interesting that in 1996 in the town of Gifhorn (Germany) the Church of St. Nicholas was built, which is an exact copy of the Transfiguration Church.

Museum of Wooden Architecture

This amazing exposition appeared in Suzdal in the sixties of the last century. The author of the unusual project was VM Anisimov, a leading specialist in the restoration workshop. The museum was decided to place on the bank of the Kamenka River on the outskirts of ancient Suzdal, on the site where the Dimitrievsky Monastery was once located. Before the revolution of 1917 there were only two temples left here - Dimitrievsky, built in 1773, the bell tower to which was attached later, in 1812, and the so-called "warm, winter" St. George's Temple (1751).

Of the many villages in the vicinity of Suzdal, the surviving wooden structures were brought here: peasant huts, churches, outbuildings. The creators of the museum and the village of Kozlyatyevo did not forget about it. The Church of the Transfiguration took an honorable place, where the Dimitrovsky temple used to be.

The place vacant for a long time on the steep bank of the Kamenka River was filled with magnificent creations created by talented Russian masters. As the organizers planned, as a result of the restoration work, a real village turned out, in which everything that has been preserved from the 18th-19th centuries has been collected, was not dismantled for firewood in hard times, broken by vandals, and not burned by fires.

The streets of the created village consist of the houses brought and the owner's buildings. Above them are domes of magnificent wooden churches.

Transfiguration Church (Kozlyatyevo): description

Art historians and researchers of ancient architecture are sure that this is one of the brightest examples of a multilevel Russian wooden church. Unfortunately, history does not know who created the Transfiguration Church (Kozlyatyevo), but it is quite obvious that they were talented masters. Using only wooden structures, they managed to create a surprisingly solemn and elegant temple: its lines are harmonious and expressive, the structure as a whole is characterized by clear proportions.

In 1756 a beautiful three-storey building appeared in the village of Kozlyatyevo. The Church of the Transfiguration differs from the analogues with three central octagons, located on top of each other, crowned by an elegant bulbous glaucoma covered with a ploughshare. Similar, but slightly smaller in size glazed crowns two side aisles.

The built church, undoubtedly, decorated the small village of Kozlyatyevo. The church of the Transfiguration has an altar apse, which adjoins the eastern side. From the south is the chapel of Nicholas the Wonderworker, and from the north - the chapel of Stylites. In the west of the building there is a refectory, which is surrounded by an open gallery, resting on powerful logs-consoles.

The outbuildings that surround the church are decorated with a barrel covering, and a beautiful porch leads to an elegant gallery, raised above the ground and attached to the annex wall. The roofs of the temple are covered with aspen shingles.

Interior decoration

Built in Kozlyatyevo Preobrazhenskaya church inside is open to all three tiers. Until now, wall images of figures of saints, made by unknown painters with oil paints, have been preserved, and the walls were not previously plastered.

Carved iconostasis specialists refer to the XVIII century. Over the main throne is the canopy, and on the Royal Gates there are carved images of the four Evangelists and the Annunciation.

The Church of the Transfiguration in the museum exposition is not only one of the highest (67 meters), but also the most beautiful. It fits perfectly into the historical landscape of Suzdal.
