How to give photos the effect of "crumpled paper"

Paper is one of the most recognizable materials. That's why it is used to create various textures in Photoshop. This article will be devoted to such an effect as "crumpled paper". This texture is created quite simply, and how to achieve it, we will consider further.

To begin with, of course, open the Photoshop. It will need to create a new image. To this end, go to the "File" menu and select New. Make sure that RGB mode is in the opened window. The file size can be arbitrary, but it is better that it coincides with the resolution of the photo or picture on which you want to make the effect "crumpled paper". Photoshop allows you to create a new file of the right size without unnecessary "zamorochek". To do this, simply open the picture you want to "wrinkle", make its full selection with the "Rectangular Area" tool, then make a copy in the "Edit" menu. After that, we remove the selection, go to "File" to create "New". Thus, the new file will automatically acquire the same dimensions as the photo.

So, before us is a clean virtual sheet, on which we now create the "crumpled paper" effect in a matter of minutes. To do this, select a tool called "Gradient", and in the upper horizontal panel do some adjustments, namely:

1) choose the black and white gradient type;

2) the gradient style is set to linear;

3) in the blending mode, select "Difference";

4) the opacity should be equal to one hundred percent.

The settings are done. Now proceed directly to the process of creating a texture of "crumpled paper." To do this, we begin to create a gradient fill at different angles. We do it many times, changing at the same time in arbitrary order the angles of the inclination of the fill and the width of the transition. As a result, you should get an image from the gradients that intersect in chaotic order. In places where they intersect, there will be bruising, so it is desirable to achieve a pattern in which most gradient transitions converge at one point.

Then apply the "Embossing" filter to the image. It is in the "Stylize" option. Selecting "Embossing", you will see a window with settings in front of you, and the gradient pattern will look like a gray wrinkled paper. You can move the sliders in the settings and achieve the most suitable result. So, for example, the function "Height", with a large value, gives the picture a more rounded, fuzzy outline. The "Effect" function enhances or reduces the brightness and sharpness, and "Angle" is responsible for the angle of incidence of the lighting on the relief. So you can experiment, then click "OK".

Now we need to transfer the resulting texture to that image, which we want to give the effect of "crumpled paper". To do this, you need to use the cursor (arrow) to grab the texture and carry out the transfer. You can see that the texture completely covered the picture, so the next step will be "hike" in the layers palette. There, at the very top, there is a drop-down line in which you need to click on the blending type called "Linear light". After clicking the texture blends with the image, you will get the coveted crumpled photo.
