How to draw a mug. Lessons in building and drawing light and shadow

Drawing a mug is not as easy as it sounds. She has her own form, which she must pass on. Here you will need basic drawing skills, knowledge of perspective. Imagine that the mug is a cylinder. Try to see through it. You will see ovals that are on the bottom and up. Also, light and shadow fall on the cylinder, which is the darkest on the border. And there are reflexes formed at the junction of the object with the paper.

Learn how to draw a mug in pencil step by step, using simple drawing skills. Sharpen pencils sharper, we begin!

Drawing details

First, outline the main proportions. Draw a line that runs through the center of the cylinder of the mug (that is, not counting the handle).

Draw two ovals indicating the edges of the mug and the saucer. Note that the oval in the lower part is wider than in the upper part. This is due to the features of the perspective. That is, the ovals are not symmetric.

Inside the upper oval, draw another, smaller by a size of 3-5 mm. This forms the neck of the cup. Smooth lines show its shape. But what if you get crooked and you can not understand why and how?

Drawing a mug with a pencil is easy. To make lines as smooth as possible, it's better to draw from top to bottom - so it's more convenient. Firmly lead a pencil. Be sure to sharpen the lead.

  1. Draw the bottom of the cup to show its volume.
  2. After, in the process of work, this oval will not necessarily be erased.
  3. Outline the directive for the handle, leave the oval to which it will be attached.
  4. Draw a small oval inside the other, which is for the saucer (this is important even in how to draw a mug). Thus you show its thickness. It will be seen that the mug is not on a napkin, but has some kind of a large plate.

Draw the shape of the handle. Mark the curved line at the bottom, which means that the handle will be attached there. A stand is attached to the bottom of the cup. Show this with an oval.

Draw a shape of the handle, and also show inside the cup one more oval, which will indicate the level to which it will be filled with a drink.

Draw the details at your discretion, compare the proportions. Erase the guiding lines.

Hatching

Drawing light and shadow is the main work. This should be given special attention if you want to draw a mug in stages. Its sketch should take no more than 15 minutes. And to shade correctly, beginners are required from half an hour. Apply strokes horizontally in a semicircle, then you can easily transfer the cylindrical shape and the volume of the mug.

Light and shadow

Can not you make the image realistic? How to draw a mug is similar, knowledge in drawing light and shadow will help you. The latter can occupy half or less of the image. Also, the shadow can cover the whole object. Its location depends on the lighting.

In high light, the shadow on the subject will be inclined. The cast shadow will lie on the surface closer not to the horizontal position, but to the vertical position, but still with a slope to a certain side.

If the light source is on the side, the shadow will be vertical on the cylinder and take a certain part. And its size will depend on the angle from which you draw. Drop shadow will lie horizontally.

If the light behind the object, then the shadow completely covers it. There will be contrasting contours. But the gradient and the cast shadow will also remain. In this case, it's more difficult to draw - you need to try not to make the cylinder too dark, especially if it's made of plaster. Otherwise, the texture will appear metallic. And instead of white, another, darker one will be seen. Now imagine how difficult it is to transfer some bust to paper, while drawing a mug is easy.

Graduation

With studio light gradation from light to dark is more gradual, and from high light, gradually increase the tone that increases the strength of the subject's shadow, and gradually becomes a shadow. In this case, the shadow also becomes darker from the bottom up. At the junction with the surface, it is the lightest.

The picture is imperfectly representing gradation, in which there are no abrupt changes from one element to the next. In the baseline, shadows usually appear, where they come into contrast with the light part. Gradations are also present for any illumination. At the junction with light, the shadow is the darkest in tone. After this joint, the shadow is softer and again darkens to the edge of the cylinder, but does not become the heaviest in tone. This knowledge helps even in how to draw a mug, because it also has a cylindrical shape.

Drop Shadow

The shadow does not lie horizontally. It goes with an inclination upwards. But it can be placed in a different way, depending on the lighting. The shadow that is closer to the cylinder is the darkest. And in it, too, there is a gradient - from the object to the joint with the wall. Shadows soften as we move away from the object. The shadow also has a contour. When you show it, try to make the outline, not the stroke. The shadow that falls on the wall is darker than a cylinder.
