How do I create a cross reference?

Today we will tell you how to cross-reference. This solution allows you to provide communication with a certain part of the document. For example, you can refer to a diagram or drawing that is on another page. With this element, you can go to the specified fragment.

Where

A cross reference is created in several stages. To begin with, we need an element to which it will point. It is impossible to create such a reference to non-existent information, so prepare a chart, page numbers or another component in advance. A dialog box appears during the insertion process. It will list the items that are available for binding. We paste the cross-reference. In the document, we enter the text from which it begins. On the tab called "Insert", select the "Cross reference" command.

A type

Go to the next field. It is called the "Reference Type". Use the drop-down list. Use it to select the element type. It will be indicated by a cross reference. As options, you can use the page number, title and much more. Go to the field called "Add link." Select the information that you want to insert into this document. The set of options provided may vary depending on past actions. We pass into the field under the name "For what ...". Select the element to which the link will point.

Position and variables

Go to the next step and select the "Paste as hyperlink" item. Next, we need the item "Add word". We set a check box in front of it to activate the relative position for the target element. We press the button "Paste". A cross-reference is inserted into the document in the form of fields. At this point, we will dwell a little more. Fields are defined sets of data by which Word is required to automatically insert the selected page number, pictures or text into a specific document. For example, the DATE command is responsible for the appearance of the current date. The advantage of using fields is that the selected content (figure, page number) is automatically updated with any change. For example, if you work on a document for several days, the date will be adjusted automatically when you open and save the file. A similar algorithm works when you change a picture stored elsewhere. If the link in the corresponding field points to it, the update will be performed automatically. Therefore, there is no need to re-insert this element.

Notes

If the reference used is {REF _Ref249586 \ * MERGEFORMAT}, this indicates that the Word text editor displays the field codes instead of their values. You can send the document to print. In this case, the field values will be displayed. You can also hide codes. To see the field values, use the ALT + F9 key combination.

In the context menu, which can be called by the right mouse button, there is also a special command for these purposes. It is called "Codes / values of fields". It should be remembered that cross-references can be created even for those elements that are located in a separate document. Materials can be combined. Thus, a single main document will appear. It is in it should be inserted cross-references. Word does most operations automatically, so this process does not take much time. As for the main document, it is, in fact, a container for the collection of certain files. This element can be used to create a material that consists of several parts. Thus, work is greatly facilitated.
