Hatije Sultan: biography. Death of Hatije Sultan. Children Hatije Sultan

The series "Magnificent Age" brought Turkish actors fame and allowed to find fans around the world. Historical background of events, beautiful outfits, harem intrigues, excellent actors - very few people remained indifferent to the eastern fairy tale. Among the characters stands a sweet girl with a charming smile, which in a blink of an eye turns into an imperious woman, who has plans for revenge. What it really is - Hatije Sultan, whose biography has so many blank spots and whose life was sacrificed to the Ottoman dynasty?

The greatness of the Osmanians

The first quarter of the 16th century in the Ottoman Empire was marked by the ascension to the throne in 1520 of the tenth Sultan of the Osman dynasty , Suleiman the Magnificent (Qanuni). It was with him that the brilliant Porta reached its peak. The advancement to Europe, the conquest of new lands and the expansion of state borders, the terrifying sea raids led by the legendary Barbarossa, the commander of the Porte fleet, - in total, 13 military campaigns were carried out, which made the world shudder at the mention of the Ottoman Empire. Historians are interested not only in the image of Kanuni himself, but also in his family. The Sultan's half-sister Suleiman Hatije is a bright representative of the ruling dynasty of that time. In her life there was much greatness and luxury, and as many tears and sufferings.

Hatije Sultan - the princess of the great dynasty

Suleiman's sister was born in 1496 in Edirne, a city in the north-west of modern Turkey. The name Khatija is associated with the Islamic religion. This was the name of the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad. From the earliest childhood the girl was surrounded by luxury and honor. To offend a member of the Dynasty meant to offend the sultan himself, therefore universal respect and worship of Khatija were secured. According to the story, in addition to Suleiman, she had three other brothers (died at an early age) and four sisters - Fatima, Beyhan, Shah and Hafsa.

Hatije Sultan (photo actress, performing the role in the "Magnificent Century", you can see above) was known for a gentle temper and calm character. Despite the universal love of relatives, the girl who had matured was waiting for the same fate as the sisters in blood. Due to the established family traditions, the Sultan's daughters were married to high political figures. This was done for the good of the Dynasty.

The daughter of Selim the Terrible and the powerful AIChE

Beautiful sultana was not only pretty. In some questions, she was characterized by persistence, ambition, and arrogance, nurtured in the field of worship and adoration. If we recall Khatija's parents, it becomes clear that there could be no other way. Father - Selim I Yavuz - a formidable conqueror of Eastern Europe. During the struggle for the throne, he got rid of all the relatives in the male line in order to avoid attempts on the throne. As a legacy to his son Suleiman left a strong country and army. Mother Khatija - Aysha Khafsa Sultan is the daughter of the Crimean Khan Mengli from the Gereev dynasty. Since youth, she was noted for her beauty, her proud temper and her iron will. It was for her sake that Suleiman the Magnificent subsequently established the honorary title of Walide Sultan, that is, the mother of the ruling Ottoman monarch.

After arriving in the harem Aisha Hafsa immediately won the heart of Selim Khan, and later gave her first child and 8 children. After the death of her husband was highly respected during the reign of his son, allowing himself sometimes to interfere in public affairs. In such conditions, Hatije Sultan grew up, whose biography still causes controversy and controversy, since little confirmed historical facts have reached our time.

Ibrahim Pasha and Hatije Sultan

The first marriage of the Ottoman princess did not work out. The aged Iskender-Pasha, who became her husband, did not live a year after the wedding. A young widow returned to her mother and lived with her in Manisa until she ascended the throne of Suleiman. These historical data are beyond doubt. But the researchers of the Ottoman dynasty disagree further. According to one version, several years later Khatija Sultan married Ibrahim Pasha. By that time he had become the vizier of the empire and a close friend of Suleiman. Another version is that the young woman did not marry more, lived with a harem, had no children, and Parga Ibrahim's wife was a Muslim named Muhsine.

The first variant of the development of events seems more plausible. This is evidenced by the documents of the Vizier himself, in which Khatija is mentioned, as well as unprecedented festivities arranged by the sultan on the occasion of the wedding. Lush celebrations lasted a fortnight and required a lot of money from the treasury. As a gift from the ruler Ibrahim Pasha and Hatije Sultan received a beautiful palace, preserved until our time (Museum of Islamic Art). But at the same time, the reason for the marriage is questioned. Allegedly, the outbreak of love of extraordinary strength has led to the formation of a new family. But it is also likely that the sultan gave his sister to marry in order to bring Ibrahim even closer to him and consolidate his position.

Happy unhappy life

Hatije Sultan's biography reminds that money is not everything. Even with material wealth and position in society, you can be deeply unhappy. For a long time, the couple did not have children, that is, a full-fledged family did not work. But Hatidzhe, unlike other Muslim women, was spared from rivals. Traditionally, married to the daughter and sister of the Dynasty had to be free from family ties (or quickly get rid of them). He was not allowed to marry other girls, as is customary in Islam. In the case of treason, any sultana by blood had the exclusive right to divorce her unfaithful lover. Opal to his wife, this threatened great trouble, even to the death penalty, so the adultery happened rarely.

In the series "The Magnificent Age", Ibrahim changes Khatija with a servant. Sultansha learns about this, but does not dare to divorce. The wounded pride allows her only to remove her anger from her husband's mistress. Indeed, such a History of Hatije Sultan Based on information confirming that the pasha was cheating on her.

Children Hatije Sultan

A few years after the wedding, the couple still got their own children. From the point of view of history, this is again contradictory information. The similarity is only in one - Hatida and Ibragim had three children. According to some sources, their first-born died in infancy, and later the twins Osman and Khuryjikhan were born (this version is considered in the series). According to other sources, the first and only son was named Mehmed, and two daughters - Fulane and Hanim. And it is claimed that Hanym Sultan is buried next to Roksolana. Apparently, Hurrem took part in the fate of the girl after the death of her parents. More children Hatidzhe Sultan do not appear anywhere. It is assumed that one of them lived a long enough life, and someone died of smallpox before his mother.

Beginning of the End

The year 1536 arrived. By this time, Ibrahim Pasha, the son of a poor sailor, was not only the chief vizier, the serasker, but also the closest friend of the sultan. Together with Suleiman, they ate, hunted, shared leisure, discussed grandiose plans. Kanuni gave Ibrahim an oath to protect him from everyone, even from himself. But the power spoils people. It came to the point that the great vizier began to call himself a sultan, a serasker, which Suleiman was immediately informed of. This was the beginning of the end. Ibrahim lost the trust of the sovereign and was executed on his orders. There is a version that together with the vizier his little son was executed.

If we consider the entire history of the Ottomans, then there is no need to be surprised. In the empire it was allowed to execute the heirs and deprive their descendants of life in order to avoid rebellion and a military coup. Khatija was left alone with the children, in her grief "supported" by a beloved and loving brother. Not reconciled to the loss of her husband, the sultana married no more. And two years later Hatije, having not recovered from the tragedy, left this world. There is no exact information about the reason for this. Death Hatidzhe Sultan in the series "The Magnificent Age" is presented in the form of suicide (poison poisoned). But most tend to believe that the loss of Ibrahim led her to depression and to such a sad end.

Another opinion

About events that took place more than five hundred years ago, it is always difficult to argue. After such a period of time, the historical character, especially well-known, is overgrown with a lot of fictions and guesses, so it is sometimes difficult to separate the seeds from the chaff. But to deny the existence of the individual, about which books are written and films are shot, not everyone dares. However, in Turkey such a person was found. Historian and researcher Güven Aikan insists that Suleiman Qanooni did not have a sister named Hatidje Sultan, whose biography is known to many. He refers to the documents of the period of the Ottoman rule. In particular, in the works of Nasuf-efendi (and he was, it turns out, a historian) Hatijah is not mentioned at all. In favor of this version, says that the burial place of the famous sultanas is not established for certain. It is assumed that it rests in the tomb of the parents.

The image of Hatije Sultan in culture

Whatever it was, but Hatije Sultan fell in love with the audience. Her role in the series "The Magnificent Age" was brilliantly performed by Selma Ergech - actress and model.

In other lesser-known series - "Hürrem Sultan" (2003) and "Roksolana" (1996) - the image of the most famous sister Suleiman Kanuni was also used by writers.
