Surely each of us had to hear such a notion as "futurism". Immediately there is an abstract image of something fantastic, new, irrational. In order not to make guesses, let's move directly to the consideration of this artistic style.

What is Futurism?

In general, futurism is the general name of the literary and artistic style in the early 20th century, originated in Italy, and later in Russia. The Futurists built a sort of prototype of the future, with the primary foundation of which was the destruction of cultural stereotypes. We can say that they were like the revolutionaries in art, because the goal was a general renewal of ideology and an ethical vision of all the predecessors in creative activity. This radical program challenged the entire artistic heritage, while completely not content with demands in the absolute autonomy of art. They not only put forward a new model of the world order, they recreated a new prototype of technology and urbanism.

Futurism in 20th century painting

It can be said that futurism in painting is an easy disregard for academicism, which contributes to the manifestation of inaccuracy and uniqueness. The original leaders in the painting were artists such as Hugo Boccioni, Carlo Carra, Gino Severini, Giacomo Balla. The method of execution is very similar to Cubism and Expressionism, but the visualization of the socio-political movement has become a distinctive feature. Futurist artists sought to recreate such a picture that the viewer could transfer to the other side of the measurement, move to the center of the image, so that the spatiality became tangible, and the movement sharper. Most often, the canvases displayed geometric figures, which were very multi-faceted. An illusion of a kaleidoscope was created, the color scheme of which was unusually universal.

Unusual color spectrum in the works of futuristic artists

Futurism in painting is not just a composition of figures. A peculiar characteristic is the color spectrum, the diversity of which allows you to create a characteristic handwriting of the artist. Someone used bright colors, neglecting the mixing of colors, someone preferred relatively monotonous tones. Thus, the artists displayed abstract art, whose goal was to create dynamic compositions by visualizing such physical phenomena as energy, speed and even sound. The peculiarity of these compositions in the absence of specific content, the artist primarily sought to evoke in the viewer free associations that attract different thoughts and emotions.

Futurism in Russian painting

As an orientation in the visual arts, futurism existed until the early 1920s. Russian artists during this time were very consonant with their own searches, since they often stayed in Europe. Creative figures found personal hail in the manifestos of futurists of Italian origin, but at the same time differed in their ideology. Russian Futurist artists were independent of Western artists, for example, glorified not the superiority of technology, but the loneliness of people among cars. Just from that moment Russian artists began to resort to the experience of traditional art and began to work actively to create images of active modern life in all its simplicity. With confidence, we can say that for artists futurism in painting is a means of self-expression, self-affirmation.

Representatives of futurism in painting

In Russia, the first representatives of Futurism, who supported this trend, were the Burliuk brothers.
They manage to portray incredibly bright images. It turns out that not only did new works were done, but they were also the founders of new groups among artists who popularized the new trend. After the circle of inheritance, it began to grow rapidly. We know such popular futurist artists as N. Burliuky, M. Larionov, N. Goncharova, M. Matyushin, N. Kulbin, A. Exter, M.F. Larionov, N.S. Goncharova, K. Malevich. In the works of these representatives, we can observe the multidimensionality of the perspective, a combination of which each viewer sees in his own way.

Many artists simply borrowed the idea from the Cubists, which resulted in a considerable number of works by such authors as Nathan Altman (Anna Akhmatova, 1914), Robert Falk (Crimean Yard, 1915), Kazimir Malevich ("Rye Harvesting", " 1912). One of the atypical cube-futuristic creations became the bright portraits of Vladimir and David Burliukov in Vasily Kamensky's book Tango with Cows (1914).

At that time the literature harmoniously adjoined to the fine arts. Poets futuristic direction resorted to the visualization of artists, resulting in common works.

Let's look at one of the works. The character of this picture is essentially similar: the geometrization of the picture depicted is analogous to the Cubist artists. But in Futurists, that is, Cubo-Futurists, geometrization plays the least role, and is not always inherent. In Malevich's painting, we see a figure of a man geometrized, chained in some metal armor. In the upper part of the picture we see the image of a fork, here there is a saw, a playing card and a signboard. The whole image seems to be hovering, floating. Each work carries a symbol, and this creation is no exception. We can say that the objects depicted symbolize the character of aviation of its first years. As it were, the figure of the balloonist soars. The space itself seems to consist only of multicolored planes and volumes in the form of a cylinder.

After the war period, every "surviving" futurist artist moved in his direction. It can be said that as an artistic movement, futurism gradually began to lose its relevance, and, on the whole, exhausted its formal implementation and ideas. But futurism in painting is a whole epoch in the history of art. It was through creativity that the figures sought to change the world, to translate the world outlook of people to a different angle through self-expression and the depth of symbols. The incidents of social issues were simply building up a philosophy that affected not only painting and literature, but also cinema, video art, and, of course, theatrical art.
