French Guiana - a sad past, a promising present

French Guiana is an island in the north of Latin America. As the name implies, this territory has a direct appeal to a European country like France. Natural resources here are quite rich, nevertheless, agriculture is developed only on the coast. Currently, the region is called Guiana, the definition of "French" has historical roots. The fact is that in the epoch of colonial conquests the Guiana existed:

- French,

- British (Guyana),

- Dutch (Suriname).

The territory of French Guiana until the end of World War II was used as a reference point. It is for this reason that a large number of historically and culturally significant sights are not here. Nevertheless, such a specific past left its imprint, and a fairly large number of tourists are eager to visit the buildings of the former colonies. The islands of Ile du Sali, which are famous for the "Devil's Island" colony, located on the smallest island of Il du Diabl, are popular.

In addition to the ruins of places of detention, French Guiana attracts travelers with an amazing nature, which is replete with a wide variety of flora and fauna. And in the town of Saint-Laurent du Maroni, there is a museum in which objects and documents showing the lives of prisoners are stored, and shackles and even prison cells are found among the exhibits. In addition, French Guiana is a place of rapidly developing eco-tourism.

The capital of Guyana is Cayenne. The town is well located in the west of a small peninsula, between two rivers: Cayenne (hence the name) and Mahuri. There are several streets that can interest the guests of the capital. Firstly, this is the Place Grenoble, which is the oldest part of the city, it is on this street you can find most of the public buildings . Secondly, the street Place de Palmistes, which is considered to be the brightest part of the Cayenne. It is concentrated most of all cafes, restaurants and other institutions. Thirdly, we can not fail to mention the Avenue de Generale de Gaulle. She will certainly be interested in fans of noisy parties and nightly entertainment. In addition, this area is considered the main commercial center of Cayenne.

In addition to the country's capital, travelers often visit the Kura region, it is one of the world's cosmodromes, which undoubtedly makes this place special. In the city there is a thematic center, in which information is presented not only about the past of the cosmodrome, but also about its present.

French Guiana is also famous for the village of refugees who fled to the tropics back in the 1970s. In their village on the market you can buy traditional products, as well as taste local food, in particular, "green" soup.

No less attractive is the Kau district. It is distinguished by quite good roads and a whole network of ramified forest paths. Specific climate and geographical features of the territory allowed to preserve the diversity of species of animals and plants almost in its original form.

In Guiana it is possible to practice swimming, as well as water sports (surfing, windsurfing), but only near the capital or the Kuru district. For lovers of hiking and traveling, there is a beautiful and scenic route, stretching from Remi-Montzholi to the peaks of Montagne du Makhuri.
