Erythromycin ointment: composition, properties and field of application.

Erythromycin ointment - a substance that has a light yellow or brownish-yellow color. A hundred grams of ointment contains 1.0 gram of erythromycin, plus the base - lanolin anhydrous and petrolatum, and sodium sulphate - up to 100 grams.

It is an antibiotic of the bacteriostatic spectrum of action from the macrolide group. The action is based on a reversible bond with the 50S subunit of the ribosomes, thereby disrupting the formation of peptide bonds between the amino acid molecules. Accordingly, the process of protein synthesis of microorganisms is blocked, at the same time, it does not affect the process of synthesis of nucleic acids. There is an ointment intended for external use. It is indicated for various infections of the skin, as well as for soft tissues, including skin diseases of pustular nature, including youthful acne, bedsores, infected wounds, trophic ulcers, second and third degree burns.

Erythromycin ointment - instructions for use.

The drug is applied to the area of the skin that is affected at least two to three times during the day, the treatment should be continued from 1.5 to 2 months. In case of skin diseases, as well as soft-tissue diseases of a purulent type, the drug should be applied not in a thick layer, at least once or twice a day. But this should be done only after the necrotic masses and pus have been completely removed. With burns ointment is recommended to apply no more than two or three times a week, so as not to disturb the skin once again. The duration of treatment depends on the severity and form of the disease and varies from a few days to two weeks.

Usually the ointment is transferred fairly well, but perhaps some moderate effect of the irritating plan. Among the side effects there is a possible development of an allergic reaction, such as redness and itching. Prolonged use of the drug increases the risk of secondary infection, which is caused by microorganisms resistant to erythromycin. In this case, there is a high probability of superinfection, which will have to be treated with other, more powerful drugs.
