Ernest Seton Thompson, Snap: summary

"Snape" is the story of Ernest Evans Thompson, a Canadian writer of the 20th century. The work tells of the taming of a bulldog puppy and his first successes in hunting. The story is included in the school curriculum and is recommended for reading.

Ernest Seton, Snap: summary

Early in the morning the protagonist, an avid hunter, receives a telegram from Jack, a schoolmate. The message says that a friend sent him a puppy, with whom he should be polite, because "he does not like impolite". The protagonist is looking forward to the parcel. She comes, the hunter examines it and sees the inscription: "Dangerous." At the same time, strange sounds are heard from within.

Looking into a small hole, closed by a lattice, the hero saw a bull terrier puppy, who growled and tried to bite him. Then our hunter brought the tools and opened the box. Having received freedom, the puppy first rushed to the feet of the new owner. And if the paw of the terrible animal had not become entangled in the net, our hero would have had a hard time. And so he managed to jump on the table at the last moment. The puppy vigilantly looked around and took a wait-and-see attitude. On attempts of the hero to calm him, he did not react at all.

Restless evening

Very believable and with knowledge of the case describes the behavior of the puppy Ernest Seton Thompson ("Snap"). The summary can serve as an excellent confirmation. The hero decides to wait. Only after half an hour the warlike kid calmed down and stopped roaring. But to begin with, the hunter decided to lower a newspaper instead of his feet, which was immediately attacked. An hour later the bull terrier moved closer to the fireplace, but the eye from the new owner did not lower.

The hero carefully followed the tail of the pet - if he jerked at least once, it would be a sign of friendliness. But the tail remained motionless. So they sat together until the fire began to fade. When the room got colder, a small tyrant got under the bed, where a warm fur rug lay. The hunter decided that he too would not be in a hurry to take a nap, but he did not dare to go downstairs. So he moved to the dresser from the table, and from there to his bed. A few minutes later, the puppy lay at his feet. At the same time, every attempt to move or be comfortable settled was accompanied by a growl and a bite from the dog. So they fell asleep.

Education

On how much effort a person should make to tame an animal, Thompson will tell the reader in his story. Snap (the summary gives an idea of his character), and this is how the puppy was named, of course, differed in self-will and seriousness from most other dogs. But our hero managed to get along with such a nonsense dog.

So, the upbringing of a formidable puppy began. Our hunter locked the baby without food and water alone in the room. Snape all this time ruffled, gnawed furniture, scratched the door and made noise. But the hero did not give up. He knew that it was worth waiting a little - and he would achieve his goal. It turned out as the hunter supposed. When, at last, the small robber was at large, he first of all rushed not to his master, but to a bowl of food. After this incident, the puppy realized who was in charge of the house. And even at night he stopped biting his master by his feet.

First Hunt

In those parts where our hero lived, men often gathered and went to hunt wolves, as predators destroyed sheep and other cattle. The owner of a live gift, also taking part in this, began to take with him and a very small puppy. True, first sat in the saddle and only watched what was happening Snape.

The brief content allows to get an impression of how the dog behaved, which for the first time was among a pack pursuing a predator. When the bulldog grew and became stronger, the owner allowed him to participate in the hunt. Somehow the pack managed to take the trace of the jackal. The dogs rushed to pursue the beast, Snap joined them. It was his first hunt. The greyhounds quickly caught up with the jackal and surrounded him. Then came the wolfhounds, who quickly dealt with the predator.

"The Plush Dog"

Much attention is paid to detail when describing the scene of the baiting of the beast by Seton Thompson ("Snap"). The summary, however, does not allow to expound the episode in all colors. So the dogs crowded around the jackal. However, in this hodgepodge it was impossible to see anything, especially a small white fluffy bundle, called Snap. A small dog simply could not be seen because of the backs of thoroughbred large dogs.

Then the assembled hunters laughed at our hero and his "plush dog", from which there is no use. On the other hand, there was no harm from Snap. Therefore, all complacently allowed and henceforth the bull terrier to hunt together with the pack. But the owner himself had a completely different opinion and was not at all upset. He only smiled calmly and promised that those present would understand what his "plush dog" could do.

The driven wolf

We continue to tell the story of a small dog named Snap (summary). And then once again there was a hunt. This time the dogs took the wolf's track. This time the predator was much more serious than the previous jackal. And again the greyhounds caught up with the beast and surrounded it. The wolfhounds arrived in time, but this time the dogs did not hurry to cling to the enemy. The thing was that the wolf was not going to give up and even bitten one of the dogs. The hunters, who are watching from afar, decided that now the royal danes will come running - the predator will come to an end. But the Great Danes retreated. Like all previous dogs, they only surrounded prey.

Scramble

But then Snap intervened. The brief content provides an opportunity to understand what kind of character this kid had. A small bulldog, did not stop to stand in an environment and bark at a predator. He ran through the pack and silently rushed to the enemy. The wolf instantly reacted to the attack and strongly bit the dog. The force of the blow was such that Snap, with his side bent, flew to one side.

But Snape did not give up so simply. He jumped up and again, soundlessly rushed again, aiming in the nose. The wolf twitched for a moment. And this was enough to Snape managed to grab the enemy in the nose. The predator tried to drop the little dog. But he could not. When the battle was over, on the ground the hunters saw a dead wolf and Snap clinging to his nose.

Decoupling

The story "Snap" is coming to an end, the summary of which was described in the article. The owner calls his pet, but the dog does not move. The hero leans toward him and persuades him to let go of the predator's nose. The dog growled and unclasped his teeth. At parting, he licked his hand to the owner, and now he is forever silent. One of the pastoralists who participated in the hunt said that it would be better for him to lose 20 bulls, than such a dog perished. The dog was buried behind a farm on a hill.

So we retold the story "Snap". A brief summary for the readers' diary can also be supplemented with your impressions of the read work and the citations you like.
