Drobitsky Yar - a terrible symbol of the Holocaust

The war brought so much grief and tears that for each person they accounted for more than for whole generations. The world is changeable, at times ruthless and cruel. In the period "when, as Anna Akhmatova said, she was smiling, only dead, she was glad to be calm", what one had to worry about to people is not to describe either one or thousands of words. Fascist ideology was based on praise and belief in the great vocation of the Aryan race, which led to genocide. The victims of this terrible phenomenon became such only because their political, racial, national, religious motives were not the same as those who wanted their extermination. Memorials of the victims of the fascist genocide are scattered all over the world, one of which is in Ukraine, in Kharkov, in a place called Drobitsky Yar. Fascism "awarded" humanity with the most black periods of history, horrifying memories and frightening pages of books.

Drobitsky Yar - the wound of Kharkov

The evil of fascism spread during the Second World War into vast territories. The Soviet Union was no exception. The main goal of the fascists was not only to win the war, get territories and resources, but also to wipe out those who, in their opinion, were unworthy to live with them on the same planet. The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated all over the world on the twenty-seventh of January. This date again revives in memory those terrible events that have forever left an imprint in history and hearts. Drobitsky Yar, Kharkov ... The history of this place is not very lenient on the part of the fascist invaders.

In the fierce winter cold of 1941-1942, the land of this Yar took over more than thirty thousand corpses of local residents, most of whom were Jews. This is one of the largest mass graves of the victims of Nazism, one of the most severe wounds that the Kharkiv region and the whole world received.

The history of the massacre

The leg of the Nazis appeared in Kharkov in December 1941. After the occupation of this territory, an order was given for the resettlement of all local Jews to the eastern part of the city and brought to the knowledge of the entire population. Crowds of people who created the human river, two days - from 15 to 16 December - went through the avenue, while carrying who are valuable things, who are children, who is an old grandfather. Everyone understood that the cold barracks of factories are not their ultimate goal. Each of the crowd went to death. In order to save their children, women pushed them out of this condemned mass of people in the hope that the local people would save them. Unfortunately, few people strived to share the grief of others in those days, because everyone had enough of their own.

In small rooms, people could not even sit down, they had to stand up while they were as full of suicide bombers. From time to time hundreds of people were taken out of these barracks to take their lives on the outskirts of the city where Drobitsky Yar is located, brutally shooting at two previously excavated excavations. A few days after this crime the earth did not dry out of the blood and moved from the moans of still living.

Liberation of Kharkov

After the Kharkiv region was liberated in 1943, a special commission was set up to establish the facts of what was happening in the Drobitsky Yar. The Soviet authorities have long closed their eyes and ears on this tragedy. More than one year the hearts of those who care about thousands of people were torn apart not only from horror and sadness, but also from the fact that everyone pretended that life in Kharkov was flowing without any obstacles. When the heavy rains began in the post-war period, incontrovertible evidence of mass murder began to appear on the surface of the Drobitsky Yar: people began to find human skulls and children's braids with red bows.

Actions of the Soviet authorities

To imagine what a person feels when he sees the rain blurring the grave and again, like a knife, reveals a memory, it is impossible. To ensure that the authorities took measures to bury the dead, it was very difficult, but the local residents could do it with their numerous appeals. Going on concessions, the Executive Committee allocated two women with shovels, which should have buried the ravines. Only after another couple of years it was possible to bury the dead.

Near this burial place was placed a small obelisk, on which, as was customary in the Soviet Union, there was not even a mention that the people who were exterminated here were Jews. Drobitsky Yar became a place, which citizens remember and about which the authorities forgot.

Creating a memorial

Only in 1991 there was a proposal to build a Memorial of victims of the fascist genocide on the territory of Drobitskiy Yar. The following year construction was started, but due to the constant shortage of funds, the first part of the memorial was opened in 2002.

It consisted of the sign of the Menorah, the alley and the monument. In 2005, the funeral hall with the Sorrow Cup was erected. Humanity does not recognize all the names that have forever been erased from the earth by that terrible crime of the fascist invaders, but the memory of them will be eternal.
