Double consonants: rules, examples

Double consonants in the root or after the prefix - a simple matter. But some words include a sonorous sound in the oral speech, which displays on the letter not one but two letters. Examples in which there are doubled consonants are set forth in the article.

In justification of those who do not have 100% literacy (and most of them), it is worth saying that the speech that Pushkin used is one of the most complex in the world. Therefore, the rules of spelling need to be repeated from time to time. Consider the most common mistakes in writing words with double consonants.

Double "ж"

There are many words in the Russian language, the writing of which does not correspond to any rule. So, the double "g" is written in the following words:

  • burning;
  • yeast;
  • rein;
  • Buzz;
  • juniper.

But in the case of the alternation of sounds, "ж" and "з" are written differently. For example, the verb "scream" comes from the noun "squeal". Therefore, despite the fact that in oral speech doubled consonants are heard, it is written "zzh".

Difficult words

Units of language, called complex, often cause doubt when writing. If the first part of the word ends with the letter with which the second begins, there are doubled consonants.

Examples:

  • Maternity hospital;
  • Head physician.

These cases should not be confused with words formed from two parts, one of which includes doubled consonants:

  • A gramophone record (gramophone record);
  • Cadmium (cavalry army).

But if the adjective is formed from a stem in which there are doubled consonants, the above rule is observed. He needs to follow when writing other parts of speech. The main condition is that the double consonant precedes the suffix. Below are examples of sentences in which words with doubled consonants are present.

  1. The Gauls are tribes that existed in the so-called Gallic period.
  2. His work was rated five points on a five-point system.
  3. Hun's bow is a weapon created by nomads who are known in history as the Huns .
  4. After nine participants left the project, it was no longer a group , but a small group .
  5. The postman used to use diminutive forms in his speech: a letter, a telegram , a parcel.

Exceptions

But there are lexical units formed from words with double consonants, but not falling under the rules given above. These exceptions need to be remembered.

  • Crystal, but crystal;
  • Finn, but Finnish;
  • Column, but column;
  • Ton, but five-ton.

Exceptions can also include derivatives of proper names.

Examples:

  • In those distant times she was not yet Alla Petrovna - a woman of formidable and imperious, but stupid and naive Alka .
  • One of the characters in Furmanov's work was a girl named Anna , better known as " Anka the Gunsmith".
  • His name was Philip . And of all the works of classical literature, he most of all did not like the story of Tolstoy " Filipok ."

At the junction of the prefix and the root

In such cases, spelling of words with doubled consonants is used. But this rule also has exceptions. In such words, for example, how to appeal or fake, the prefix ends with the letter with which the root begins.

It should not be confused to write the verbs "succumb" and "move." In the first case, we are talking about an action that can be expressed as follows: "to be under the influence, to agree", in the second - to "go."

Words of foreign origin
